DOLPHINS ACQUIRE 2013 2ND ROUND PICK FROM INDIANAPOLIS
The Dolphins made a trade on Sunday, but it wasn't one to address the glaring hole at wide receiver. The Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts agreed on a trade that sent backup cornerback Vontae Davis to the Colts in exchange for a 2nd round pick in the 2013 draft according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports. Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald is reporting that a player being sent to the Dolphins could also be in the works, but nothing is confirmed. The trade comes at a curious time as the team is just two weeks away from opening the regular season. Davis had lost his starting job to free agent pickup Richard Marshall, but still figured to be a key piece in the secondary this season. Trading a former 1st round pick after just three seasons for only a 2nd round pick is not likely going to go over well with the Dolphins fan base. The Dolphins appear to be headed into a rebuilding year by trading away their Pro Bowl WR, a former 1st round pick cornerback and starting a rookie quarterback. The silver lining with this trade is that Miami could be gearing up for a big offseason in 2013, as they have over $50 million in cap space and now have 5 draft picks in the first 3 rounds. DOLPHINS TRIM ROSTER TO 78 PLAYERS ON SATURDAY

The third preseason game is in the books as the Dolphins lost to the Atlanta Falcons 23-6 on Friday night. Now the team must trim the roster to 75 players by Monday at 4:00PM ET. The Dolphins got a head start on Saturday as they released 9 players and placed one on the PUP/NFI Reserved List. These moves brings the Dolphins roster to 78 players, so three more moves will need to be made in the next 48 hours. The 9 players who were released today were cornerbacks Jonathan Wade, Trenton Hughes and Marcus Brown, safety Tyrell Johnson, defensive tackle Chas Alecxih, defensive end Jacquies Smith, linebacker Josh Linam, tight end Les Brown, and running back Jerome Messam. Running back Jonas Gray was the player placed on the PUP/NFI Reserved list. Monday's deadline of 75 players is just the first major cut down day next week. The team will need to cut the roster down to 53 players by 9:00PM ET next Friday. This week will likely be full of rumors of potential trades around the league and so far the Dolphins are already involved in some. There has been speculation that either quarterback Matt Moore or David Garrard could be shopped for the right price and that Miami could be in the market to try and acquire a WR from another team. COMPETITION OVER AS TANNEHILL IS NAMED STARTING QUARTERBACK

When the Miami Dolphins selected Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill with the 8th overall pick in April, every draft "expert" and most fans expected him to start the 2012 season, if not the entire season, as a backup quarterback. The consensus was that Tannehill had all the tools to become a quality NFL starter but having only started 19 games in college was going to hurt his progress early in his pro career. Fast forwarded 4 months and Tannehill has gone from starting long shot, to being named the starter. Today head coach Joe Philbin made the announcement that Tannehill had won the open quarterback competition between veterans Matt Moore, David Garrard and Pat Devlin. Ryan Tannehill will likely see the majority of the snaps in this upcoming Friday's game against the Atlanta Falcons. The third preseason game is usually treated as the "dress rehearsal" for the regular season with the starters typically playing until the end of the 3rd quarter. How much, if any, that Tannehill will play in the fourth and final preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys has yet to be determined. Tannehill becomes the first Dolphins rookie quarterback ever to open the season as the starting quarterback. Hall of Fame quaterbacks Bob Griese and Dan Marino both did not start from day one. WORK TO BE DONE BUT TANNEHILL LOOKS LIKE REAL DEAL

The Dolphins opened their 2012 preseason schedule against Tampa Bay, but failed to give Philbin his first win as they fell 20-7 to the Buccaneers. The starting defense struggled, the starting offense moved the ball but couldn't finish off drives. Overall it was what you could call a "sloppy" performance. Nothing to be real alarmed about for Dolphins fans, as this was the first preseason game and there was no game planning. One of the biggest reasons why the preseason exists is so teams can shake off the rust and get in game shape. Work obviously needs to be done before the team is ready to travel to Houston to take on the Texans in week one. The biggest story of the night for the Dolphins though was the play of rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Playing mostly with the second team offense, he hardly looked like a rookie. Tannehill took over late in the second quarter and played until the end of the 3rd quarter. Tannehill was 14 of 21 for 167 yards and 1 touchdown, and almost had a 2nd touchdown pass to Roberto Wallace in the 2nd quarter, but the play was overturned after an official review. With David Garrard out for 2-4 weeks with a knee injury and Matt Moore as his only competition, it appears the Tannehill era might be starting much sooner than anyone had ever anticipated. While it is still early, the signs are pointing to Tannehill possibly being the answer to the decade plus search at the quarterback position. TELL US WHAT YOU THINK IN THE FINHEAVEN FORUMS |
