Dolphins end Jets playoff hopes with 19-17 win PDF Print E-mail

DOLPHINS END SEASON ON HIGH NOTE WITH 19-17 WIN

Dolphins 19 Jets 17

The Dolphins 2011 season came to end on Sunday and so did the career of Dolphins great Jason Taylor. Both Taylor and the Dolphins ended the day on a high note with a 19-17 win over the division rival New York Jets.

The season did not go the way the Dolphins had hoped for with a 6-10 record, but after starting the season off 0-7, to finish it 6-3 was a little something to be proud of and to build on entering the offseason. The Dolphins will begin tomorrow searching for the next head coach and will start off by interviewing interim head coach Todd Bowles for the job.

The Jets needed to win this game and have help to make the playoffs, but the Dolphins made sure they couldn't accomplish the most important part of the Jets playoff scenario. With stars Reggie Bush and Jake Long missing from the offense, the Dolphins had trouble moving the ball the majority of the game, but did put together an impressive 21 play, 94 yard drive in the 4th quarter that ended with a one yard pass from Matt Moore to Charles Clay that gave the Dolphins a late lead and helped clinch the victory.

On defense, one of the biggest stories of the game was that defensive end Randy Starks picked off Mark Sanchez twice in the game and Marvin Mitchell had an interception late in the 4th quarter as the Jets were in the red zone looking to take the lead.

Kicker Dan Carpenter connected on four field goals, including a 58 yarder as time expired in the first half. The kick probably could have been made from 68 yards or further. Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Marshall had five receptions for 50 yards and finished the season with an impressive 81 receptions, 1,214 yards and 6 touchdowns.

The Dolphins will pick #9 in April's NFL Draft after winning today. With the win the Dolphins moved down one spot in the order with the Carolina Panthers jumping ahead of them. The Dolphins season might be over, but a very important offseason has just begun for the team that will start with picking the next head coach.

SUNDAY'S GAME AGAINST THE JETS WILL BE JT'S LAST

Jason Taylor

Outside Linebacker/Defensive End Jason Taylor will call it a career after Sunday's game against the division rival New York Jets. Taylor has spent 15 years in the NFL after being a third round pick in the 1997 NFL draft.

Taylor, a six time Pro Bowler, and the Defensive Player of the Year in 2006 ends what likely will be a Hall Of Fame career. Taylor spent 13 of his 15 seasons with the Dolphins and the other two years with the Washington Redskins and the New York Jets. Going into Sunday's game, Taylor has 139.5 career sacks, 7 of which came this year.

LONG, MARSHALL HEADED TO 2012 PRO BOWL

2012 Pro Bowl

On Tuesday, the NFL announced the initial rosters for the 2012 Pro Bowl teams. The Dolphins will be sending two players to this year's game.

Left Tackle Jake Long was selected as a starter and will be making his fourth trip to the game as a Dolphin and NFL player. Long has now made the Pro Bowl every year he has been in the league.

Wide receiver Brandon Marshall was selected as a reserve and will be making his third trip to the game as a NFL player and first as a Dolphin.

Congratulations to both Long and Marshall for making the Pro Bowl!

BUSH RUNS WILD AS TODD BOWLES EARNS FIRST WIN

Todd Bowles

The Dolphins saw their head coach Tony Sparano lose his job last Monday and could have easily thrown in the towel on the remainder of the regular season. Instead, the team, now coached by interim head coach Todd Bowles, went into hostile Buffalo and completed the season sweep of the Bills with a 30-23 victory.

The game started off in the Bills favor as CJ Spiller scored on a 24 yard run following a Reggie Bush fumble in the 1st quarter. Until a late 4th quarter push by the Bills, this was all they were able to manage on offense most of the game. The Dolphins after falling behind 7-0 went on a 20-0 run with two Matt Moore touchdown passes, one to tight end Anthony Fasano in the second quarter and a 65 yard bomb to Brandon Marshall in the 4th quarter. In between the two touchdown passes, kicker Dan Carpenter added two field goals from 20 yards and 26 yards.

The Bills did manage to make a comeback in the 4th quarter as quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw two touchdown passes and kicker Dave Rayner added a 34 yard field goal. The Bills late game scoring surge was benefited by an onside kick recovery.

The play of the game, that ended up being the game winning touchdown was when Bush broke off a 76 yard touchdown run as he ended up having a monstrous day running the ball. For some reason when the Dolphins go to Buffalo and it is snowing, a Dolphins running back has a good chance of rushing for over 200 yards. Bush did that as he finished the day with 25 carries for 203 yards and one rushing touchdown. Bush also added 6 yards receiving on one reception. With his performance today, Bush pushes his rushing total to 973 yards and appears to be well on his way to his first ever 1,000 yard season.

Speaking of 1,000 yard season, Marshall finished the day with 3 receptions for 84 yards and one touchdown. He now has 1,021 yards on the season and it is his 5th straight season, dating back to his Denver Bronco days that he has had a 1,000 yard receiving season. With two games to go, his 1,021 yards already has topped his 1,014 yards from a year ago.

Bowles moves to 1-0 as a NFL head coach, and will take his team into New England next week to play the Patriots. While Bowles is on the Dolphins head coach list, it is very unlikely that he will get the permanent job following the season. He has probably two more games to build his resume for a potential head coach job in another city.

Enjoy the win Dolfans!
