Many Players Step Up As Final Cuts Loom

The Miami Dolphins finished the preseason with a 22-17 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Most of the starters did not play in the final game. It was time for the backups and reserves to make a claim for their spot on the final roster. There was no shortage of players making their case. Running backs Mike Gillislee (2 touchdowns) and Jay Ajayi (103 total yards) both put in solid performances. Cornerback Will Davis had two interceptions and Punter Matt Darr had three punts inside the five yard line.

Other contributors included Matt Hazel, Christion Jones, who had a 108 yard return called back on a penalty, James Davidson, Jeff Luc and many others. Devante Parker made his debut with an 11 yard reception. Unfortunately Ajayi suffered a cracked rib in the game and no timetable has been given on his return.

The Dolphins will now trim the roster down to 53 players by Saturday afternoon. Look for the Dolphins to continue to makes moves beyond Saturday. Mike Tannenbaum indicated they where may be other free agent acquisitions or trades made beyond Saturday. The Dolphins will open the regular season at the Washington Redskins on September 13th.

    Miami Edges Atlanta 13-9

The Miami Dolphins debuted their newly renovated stadium in front of the largest preseason crowd in many years. They defeated the Atlanta Falcons 13-9 with a stingy defense, a touchdown drive and a couple field goals from Andrew Franks. Wide Receiver Jarvis Landry had an amazing 46 yard reception from Ryan Tannehill that helped drive the Dolphins down the field. Earl Mitchell had a great performance coming up with big stops. The offensive line did their job protecting Tannehill despite having a makeshift lineup.

The good news for the Dolphins is they are hitting all cylinders and they escaped the game with minimal injuries. Mike Pouncey injured his knee but reports have said it is not too serious. Saturday's game was probably the last game that a majority of the starters see any real playing time. Miami released 11 players today as the work their way down to a 75 player mandatory roster by Tuesday. The Dolphins will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night. The team has some question marks at some areas with injuries but overall they seem to be all systems go as they carry their preseason success into the regular season.

    Starters Dominate Again

For the second straight week the Miami Dolphins starters turned in a solid performance. The Dolphins outplayed the Carolina Panthers on all sides of the ball. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill had another solid performance, completing 10 of 12 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown pass to running back Damien Williams. Running backs Lamar Miller and Williams both had impressive showings, For the second straight game Miller had a big time play that helped the offense move the ball down the field.

The Defensive starters once again held their own, denying the Panthers a touchdown on a unbreakable goal line stand. Corner back Jamar Taylor had a 27 yard interception which was the play of the game. Taylor later suffered a quad injury and was sidelined, results of the injury of yet to be released. Reshad Jones was all over the field tonight making big plays, he seems to be set for a breakout role on the defense this season.

For the second straight week the Dolphins reserves were dismal at best, blowing another second half lead. Matt Hazel, La Michael James and Gerrell Robinson all put in good showings as they try to find spots on the final roster. The Dolphins head back home this week for the preseason home opener at newly renovated Sun Life Stadium. Expect the starters to play into the second half of probably their final action of the preseason for the most part. They will play the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday at 7pm.
