    FinHeaven Part Of The Unlucky

As all may know, FinHeaven & Co was down the majority or today. What some may know is why that happened.

Well, this morning at about 12:30am EST, a worm-like virus was sent across the interent. It caused major chaos for may internet services and hosting providers. One hosting provider that was infected, hosts FinHeaven & Co. From what I've read on other message boards, about 10-15 large hosting companies were down for well over 14 hours.

To get the full story, check out the CNN link: http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/interne...ack/index.html

To people that know hosting, the freakin Window systems caused all the problems.

Here is a quote in a Yahoo! article regarding the problems:
The attack sought to take advantage of a software flaw discovered in July 2002 that permits hackers to infect corporate database servers. Microsoft deemed the problem "critical" and offered a free repairing patch, but it was impossible to know how many computer administrators applied the fix.
And people wonder why a lot of people just LOVE Microsoft...

Anyways... sorry for the inconveinence... everything should be cool now...

Microsoft acknowledged the hole and has offered a patch since last summer (which are always FREE).

Just a case of global network admin irresponsibility. There's no excuse for not staying updated.

I agree with Muck here AJ, and asking our host for a free month is not out of the question seeing as how they were not updated, and it cost us a lot of down time.

I would throw that in their face.

    that sucks...

it is not really MS's fault they are just the obvious target for hackers since they have the most market share...that's why we use Sun Web Server instead of IIS for our Corporate Web Site - less people trying to hack it.

Over 22,000 servers were down. The company I work for lost both www.neocron.com , www.reakktor.com and we lost our remote account access and email for 14 hours. The backlogs were a pain in the arse to say the least.

Funny, I work in a large IT organization with all Microsoft web servers & yesterday was like "*yawn* another worm." It didn't affect us one bit. Sounds like the ones who were affected are the "oh well, I don't take security seriously" shops.

In IT there's no such thing as unlucky...just unprepared or uninformed.
