    Unit-by-unit special teams rankings

    2. Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins consistently finish in the top 10 in special teams DVOA, thanks largely to mistake-free coverage teams. The punt coverage team allowed just 4.9 yards per return (third best in the NFL), and helped Donnie Jones to lead the league with 39.3 net yards per punt. Olindo Mare bounced back from an injury-marred 2004 season to convert 83.3 percent of his field goals, 7-of-8 from beyond 40 yards, while booming 16 touchbacks on kickoffs. Return man Wes Welker is nothing special, though he doubles as an emergency kicker. Rookies Devin Aromashodu and Marcus Vick will challenge Welker. Vick has received an extensive tryout as a kick returner in camp.

He isnt the fastest or the strongest, but he gets it done, and has more heart than most players and that makes him SPECIAL, in that way.

I guess I will put it this way. http://www.miamidolphins.com/lockerr...sp?docid=15849

We have had MUCH worse than Welker as a return guy in our history.

AMONG DOLPHINS SINGLE-SEASON KICKOFF RETURN LEADERS: In 2005, Welker brought back 61 kickoffs for 1,379 yards, as both figures rank second among Dolphins single-season leaders ... Along with his total from 2004, he now owns two of three highest single-season figures for both kickoff returns and kickoff return yards ...

AMONG DOLPHINS ALL-TIME RETURN LEADERS: In just two years, Welker already has catapulted himself among the Dolphins’ all-time leaders in both return categories.

In finale at Baltimore, took a kickoff back 95 yards for a touchdown, the first by a Dolphin since October 1, 1989 at Houston when Marc Logan returned one 97 yards for a score ... It ended a drought of 898 kickoff returns in a row, by 76 different individuals, in which a kickoff had not been returned for a score ... It tied for the fourth-longest kickoff return by a Dolphin in the regular season and the fifth overall, including playoffs ...

Seriously? Welker isn't special? If I am not mistaken Welker recorded the most overall yards in a single-season for an individual in Dolphins history. Including kick-returning, and punt-returning records. Welker isn't the biggest guy, the smartest guy, the strongest, or the fastest. He wasn't a top overall pick, or anything special like that. But down at Texas Tech they breed 'em well. He comes with a HUGE heart and more tenacity than 99.9% of the NFL. Just like the big man Zach Thomas. I don't know what it is, but they've got some boys who die to play this game down there at Texas Tech, and the coaches sure do bring out the best in them.

I think we are missing the key word here which is special. It's like someone saying you r kid isnt special. It sounds offensive, but he is closer to ordinary. Special means that he is in his own class (not the slow class)

:hmmm: So, how is being a consistent returner, a good back up at wide receiver, and being able to kick a field goal or extra point not special? Granted I am a fan of Welker since he was brought to this team. But if you want a player that has flexibility to cover multiple roles on a team, surely Welker is special in that regard, right?
