Report: South Korea Suspends Aid to North Korea

South Korea suspended a scheduled aid shipment to North Korea after the communist regime announced it conducted a nuclear test, Yonhap news agency reported Monday.

The South had scheduled to ship 4,000 tons of cement to North Korea on Tuesday, but decided to delay it "under the current circumstances," Yonhap quoted an unidentified Unification Ministry official as saying.
Let the sanctions begin. If the world body is going to choose a path of peaceful retaliation against the North Korean government for it's recent test of a nuke, I am in favor of cutting off all foreign aid (including food and medicine) and keeping it that way until Kim is overthown or killed by his own people.

IMO, once his military starts starving, pay checks stop coming and there is no fuel to keep them warm in the winter, there would be an overthrow

The key wll be whether China cuts off aid.

Personally, I don't think it is too likely.

Is there that much of a difference in North Korea?

Noone is going to stop shipping aid to North Korea. There will be some token gestures made like this one but not only do some people have a little compassion and don't want to see millions die of starvation, there are too many practical reasons as well. Neither China nor South Korea want to have to shoulder the massive costs that would be associated with rebuilding the north.

They are equally if not more worried about the millions of refugees flowing over into China and South Korea if unification occurs too quickly. At least, that's China's concern. Reunification would probably force most of the costs to be shouldered by the South Koreans, so the Chinese aren't too worried about that part.

As for the comments about China reducing aid shipments, while it's true China has the most leverage over North Korea, you see by recent events that their leverage isn't that great. China already reduced some of its aid in the past years, but that hasn't done much to get North Korea to budge.

The problem is cutting off aid doesn't really hurt the North Korean leadership, just mostly the people who are already starving. So, we really don't have any good options here.
