Giuliani Defends Gun Control...Will He Turn GOP Into Party of Gun Control?

SACRAMENTO - Rudolph Giuliani addressed a potentially troublesome issue with conservative voters, saying his policies as mayor to get handguns off the street helped reduce crime in New York.

Asked when he would make a formal announcement that he is a candidate for the Republican nomination, Giuliani said: "Well, formally announce? I don‘t know."

If Rudy speaks the truth on the issue, he'll have no problems. The truth, at least as I see it, is that there are two Americas -- the urban areas and the rural areas. It makes virtually no sense to crack down on the gun club in Bumwad, AL. In fact, I think you can make an argument that the presence of guns in that community probably augments safety. It also makes virtually no sense to allow guns in New York City. The population is just too high, and the population density (probably more important) is just insane compared to what it is in good old Bumwad.

We need to enforce the laws on the books, and we need to figure out what policies allow us to keep the guns where they belong. It might sound difficult, but I think it's the balance that will work for this country.

I've got so many lawyers lined up to see me, you'd think I had tobacco leaking out of my breast implants.

I agree essentially with what youre saying here, Im in favor of gun control. Not outlawing but control. However, being a fellow Virginian I think we can agree that gun control would not go over well there or anywhere in the South. Texas? Really I think this issue will be one that his fellow candidates in the Pub Party will harp on to get votes at the primaries. There are people in the South who would give up their guns over their dead bodies, and theres plenty of big cities down there too. Guiliani really doesnt reflect the views of most Republicans, he probaly could win a general election, maybe even as a independant but he wont win the primaries in the South.

I don't think that guns are particularly welcome in the true Southern cities. You don't want guns in Houston proper. You don't want them in Atlanta. Richmond isn't really a city in this sense (though it's close), and Charlotte is probably very borderline as well. The difference in the organization of the population in the South has a lot to do with it.
