Reuters:Bush success vs. al Qaeda breeds long-term worries

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush's administration has crippled al Qaeda's ability to carry out major attacks on U.S. soil but at a political and economic cost that could leave the country more vulnerable in years to come, experts say.

That was kind of an odd article to me. They say that on one hand, we have weakened al Qaeda's ability to carry out large attacks. But on the other hand, we are more at risk now than at any other point since 9/11.

They don't really say why they think that. Or maybe I missed it. Because they mention their resurgence in Pakistan. But still say that their networks now work without a strong base. So how exactly are we more at risk right at this moment than before?

There is a line in the article that says they might be a bit unwilling and unable to carry something large scale out. I can see both of those being legitimate, less so the unwilling part. Maybe they are focusing their efforts on Iraq. Or maybe they are just sitting back and planning or building their forces.

But honestly, I can't imagine its all that difficult to stage some kind of attack here. Do they know the situation on the border with Mexico? Someone pointed that situation out as a reason as to why the 'war on terror' is a hoax. I wouldn't go that far as to say its a hoax. But good lord. How is that not being exploited by terrorists if they are serious about attacking us?

Either male or female says something about this negatively, will get hammered here, that was my thoughts upon seeing this article. The subject matter is so wide open when debating.

i'd say that's right on the money...

it still baffles me how this administration can go "General Sutler" about your mail, your phone records, your bank transactions, your mouthwash at the airport, etc. etc. etc. ... and yet yawns over an open border where hundreds of thousands of "brown people" can stroll right across any time of day they like...

suggesting AQ is "crippled" from organizing an attack is a little like saying that because parks are smaller and pitching watered down, there's gonna be no more no-hitters in baseball... it can certainly happen again...

it just seems to me that if you truly wanted to "cripple" Al Qaeda, you'd actually go AFTER Al Qaeda in Al Qaeda's home region... (Pakistan)
