    Found: The New Earth

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/liv...n_page_id=1965
It's got the same climate as Earth, plus water and gravity. A newly discovered planet is the most stunning evidence that life - just like us - might be out there.

Above a calm, dark ocean, a huge, bloated red sun rises in the sky - a full ten times the size of our Sun as seen from Earth. Small waves lap at a sandy shore and on the beach, something stirs...

This is the scene - or may be the scene - on what is possibly the most extraordinary world to have been discovered by astronomers: the first truly Earth-like planet to have been found outside our Solar System.
The discovery was announced today by a team of European astronomers, using a telescope in La Silla in the Chilean Andes. The Earth-like planet that could be covered in oceans and may support life is 20.5 light years away, and has the right temperature to allow liquid water on its surface.

Pity we can't get there, I read somewhere that if Einstein's theory of relativity is right it pretty much renders space travel as impossible (though I read this like 4 years ago... maybe ckb can correct me). Still pretty cool thing.

That's cool.. it's only been something like 20 years since the first supposed extrasolar planet was discovered to now hundreds being confirmed.

Of course, because of their size, most are gaseous giants like Jupiter (actually bigger in many cases), but recent advances in astronomy are going to increase the percentage of Earth-like extrasolar planets in that list.

Currently, no physicist has shown faster-than-light travel is possible. Those that have proposed things like wormholes or going through black holes are really dealing with more speculative mathematics than anything else.

In any case, if we could go faster than light, time wouldn't be a problem since going faster than light means you go backwards in time. But, as far as we know, nothing made of ordinary matter can even reach light speed.

So, sure we could reach such a planet, but it would take most likely hundreds of years (just going 10% light speed would be unbelievable almost, so 20.5 light years away doesn't mean we can make it there in a few decades).

    I call President.

Its a cool discovery, but we'll never reach it in our lifetimes.

Good post. What do you mean when you say going faster than light makes you go backwards in time? Has it been proven that time travel even exists?

If so, our first order of business should be getting Dan Marino 7 or 8 superbowl rings.

Astrophysicists are very rarely right on their first guess ('scientific' projections) about new planets.

He said "if"...all the data points to 'it' being highly improbable (or more)
