Report: Millions Blown On Government Cards

Federal employees charged millions of dollars for Internet dating, tailor-made suits, lingerie, lavish dinners and other questionable expenses to their government credit cards over a 15-month period, congressional auditors say.

A report by the Government Accountability Office, obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press, examined spending controls across the federal government following reports of credit-card abuse at departments including Defense, Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs.

I can recall when the military first introduced the government credit card and mandated it's use for official use in lieu of obtaining advanced travel and per dien when soldiers went temporary duty (TDY). Problems such as these instantly became rampant, not so much with the intent of malice, but the fall out that occurred following the soldier's TDY. In "the old days", soldiers would draw an advance from Finance and would have "x" number of dollars to cover travel expenses and per diem while TDY. With the introduction of the government travel credit card, soldiers would use the card for the intended use, but would also use the card for personal expenses, just as they did with the actual cash they previously use to draw in advance. This is where the problems began.

DFAS would be VERY slow in settling TDY travel settlements and in some cases, soldiers were unable to pay the credit card bill, sometimes due to the total amount charged due to the length of TDY and notices would be sent to the individual commanders. For those who are unaware of the government credit card payment procedures, when you receive the bill from Bank of America, the total amount charged on the card is due in full. After notification, Commanders learned of the personal uses the card had been used for upon examining the credit card statement of all charges made while TDY.

Now, "personal charges" that soldiers (or civilians for that matter) incur on the card while TDY that do not exceed the total daily per diem rate for the TDY period, I really don't have much of a problem with, provided of course the charges are not ethically questionable, but for someone to be sitting at their home and using it while they sit at their computer surfing the internet, I do have a problem there.

When I was at Fort Sill, this became so much of an issue that all of the soldiers in out unit who had a government card had it temporarily deactivated and was only reactivated if the soldier was sent TDY. This could be a viable procedure for DHS and the VA.

I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.

Now come on MDFINFAN, that's a stretch. If you actually READ the article of the investigation, you see it's lower echelon employees that were making the vast majority of these erroneous charges.

To equate an employee of the US Forest Service as "this administration"...come on, keep it real!. :beer1:
