Report: Long offered $10-15 million less then Russell

While insiders maintain the Dolphins have Jake Long as the highest-rated prospect in the draft, their grade on the All-American offensive tackle is only slightly higher than that of pass rushers Vernon Gholston and Chris Long. The Dolphins are so torn as to whom to select, they're essentially auctioning off the pick – for the lowest contract.

Insiders tell me the initial offer sent to Jake Long's representatives was $10-15 million less than what the first and second picks of last year's draft (Oakland quarterback JaMarcus Russell and Detroit wide receiver Calvin Johnson) stand to earn with their rookie deals. Should one of the three be willing to sign for a significantly lower sum, the Dolphins could find themselves drafting a player who they don't necessarily have ranked at the top of their board.

You can probably see why Condon and Long are now playing the "We don't want to play for Miami" card. Obviously, Miami will eventually increase their offer, so it is still possibly that Jake Long will be the pick.

Hopefully Jake will meet us halfway. I wouldn't blame him for not taking this particular deal. With the way 1st overall picks are getting paid these days i'd probably feel insulted if I were him too.

#1 pick or not, Long is an OT, noone should expect him to get as much as a QB or WR.

    totally agree

but it depends how it is structured

what % of the 10-15 is guaranteed/escallators and what is just backend crap?

if the guaranteed # is not that far below Russell's then it might be more palatable.

I heard that the guaranteed #'s for rookies are not signing bonuses but guaranteed base salaries and roster bonuses. I don't know how the escallators fit in to the quoted #'s. so we could be structuring something that is more in line with a OL salary

agents and the media always throw out total #'s and we never know that the truth behind them is

Parcells and co have a point though in that if you're not taking a QB then you're really getting ripped of by paying the 1st pick like he is a QB.

The reason Russell got so much last year was because his agent said he deserved a bigger increase than normal over the previous year's #1 (Mario Williams) because there is a QB premium.

Well if there is a QB premium then we should get a non QB discount on this year's #1 overall.

If nothing else we'll get Gholston and save alot of money. Long might refuse because he could be the #2 or #3 guy and the money wouldn't be "that much" different.....but Gholston wouldn't go any higher than 6th and possibly later if we don't take him #1....so he would be leaving alot of money on the table by turning us down.

I think that's what you'll see. Position not withstanding, that's a significant drop for number 1 money, but I doubt you'll see us pony up move money than Russell got. I think We'll sign Long (if we sign him that is) to a deal no less than $5 million under what Russell got.

    Think about this

Jamarcus Russel got $61M over 6 years with $31M in guarantees.

Mario Williams got $54M over 6 years with $26.5M in guarantees.

Russel's contract puts him in the top 10 highest paid QB's in the league.

William's contract puts him in the top 10 highest paid DE's in the league.

If Jake Long got a contract equal to Russel's, or gawd help us a 5 or 10 or 15% increase over Russel's, it would pay him 30% more than the next highest paid offensive lineman in the league. (Alan Faneca is currently the highest paid offensive lineman in the league....5 years $40M, average of $8M per)

So based on the position he plays, offering Jake Long 10-15 million less than Russel got over 6 years is very reasonable. ($45M over 6 years is 7.5M per year, 500K less than the highest paid veteran lineman. $50M over 6 years is $8.3M per year, which would make him the highest paid offensive lineman in the league)
