What's more important - a good Offensive Coordinator or a good Defensive Coordinator?

If you had to choose between having a good Offensive Coordinator or a good Defensive Coordinator for your team, who would you pick? I would say a good Offensive Coordinator because you get to dictate on Offense and on Defense you mostly react to what the opposing Offense is doing. A good O-Coordinator can devise schemes to take advantage of the opponent's weaknesses but on Defense you can use superior talent to compensate for a not-so-good Defensive Coordinator.

    What do you think?

it depends a lot on the HC, but IMO the OC is more important for a HC who is more of a D specialist and vica verca

A good offensive coordinator and a great defense.

Like you said a receiver can't really decide where to go. He lines up where he's told to do and break his route only when the QB is in touble.

As for the defense, you can have a great plan but if you don't have players that can anticipate or react, you won't go far.

I'd rather have a good DC. He makes up for all the mistakes a Offense mades.

Since you asked, a good HEAD coach is the most important. however, given the choices you gave us, of the two, I would say that the OC is the more important. Reason is that you have to strategize things more at the point of attack and the O knows what it's going to do. I don't mean that the D does not have a strategy of it's own, but even so the other O dictates to them and they in turn HAVE to react right now. Not a split second later. Even the best DC there ever was cannot teach/coach good reractions. That's one of those things that you either have or you ain't. If you don't, then you play O !!

    You need equal balance.

The OC must be able to design on Offense that can score - from anywhere on the field.

The DC must be able to design schemes that are uneasy for opposing QB's to decipher, and still be able to stop the other team.

But, the most important aspect of it all is the HC.

Bum Phillips summed it up the best when he spoke of Don Shula - "He will take his and beat yours, and then take yours and beat his."

I knew that, but I didn't want to get "beat up" for slaughtering the English Language.

For a real laugh at how easy it is to "screw up" our language, check out this site.

English Language - all screwed up
