MERGED: 400 Pound Asthmatic Dies After Police Put Him in Choke-hold

A 400-pound asthmatic Staten Island dad died Thursday after a cop put him in a chokehold and other officers appeared to slam his head against the sidewalk, video of the incident shows.

ďI canít breathe! I canít breathe!Ē Eric Garner, 43, repeatedly screamed after at least five NYPD officers took him down in front of a Tompkinsville beauty supply store when he balked at being handcuffed.

Within moments Garner, a married father of six children with two grandchildren, stopped struggling and appeared to be unconscious as police called paramedics to the scene. An angry crowd gathered, some recording with smartphones.

Disgusting. That cop had him in a full-on choke-hold for more than 25 seconds even after five police officers were on top of him and he said he couldn't breathe more than 10 times. Total overkill.

Yeah, it's all over the news here. Regardless of whether he was selling cigarettes illegally or just breaking up a fight, choke holds are illegal here. The cop (and 4 EMTs) were suspended while they investigate.

Not sure if it is related and certainly not defending the actions (again, the chokehold is illegal here, period), but I think cops here are on edge because of the ambush shooting in Jersey City and the apparent attempts by gangs to encourage more such ambushes in the area.

Body cameras. For all police. Everywhere.

Not saying it would have prevented this, but it's the only thing I know of that protects all sides in these matters... the police from the bitterness brought on by nonsense claims of abuse, and the public from actual abuse. I get the privacy argument (what's to stop the NSA from hacking into police networks and downloading the video data), but I think it's something we need. Badly.

Protecting the **** out of us!!!

Stop being so anti-cop. You're clearly an anarchist. Protecting the **** out of people sometimes requires murder.

    New Yorks finest

A man dies from an illegal chokehold by a Police officer and EMTs do little to try and save his life. My question is why the pig that killed him has not been arrested and charged with manslaughter yet. Oh wait he's a police officer so he gets a free pass.

You're exaggerating a bit ... Actually, it was more like 15 seconds until takedown & he was put on his side. That's when the "pile on" occurred, & the chokehold was released.

Now - it's STILL ****ed up. But you know what, it wouldn't have happened to me. Know why? Because you're supposed to cooperate with police. When you resist arrest, do you think the cops are just gonna go, "Oh, ok ... We didn't know you didn't want to be arrested. Nevermind, you can just go on your way."

This'll seem cold - but play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

That being said, seems to me like "chokehold cop" is also about to win stupid prizes.

A 1 second chokehold is still an illegal chokehold.
