100 Most Influential People: Abby Wambach

Abby Wambach has always been fearless. Even as a rookie on the U.S. women’s national team, she would score goals that made me say, “Gosh, if she doesn’t win the ball, she’s probably going to get crushed.” She never blinked. If it is what her team needed, it is what she was going to do. How can you not cheer for that?

As Abby has developed into a star, scoring more international goals than any other player in history, she has embraced being a leader. There are times when Abby just throws the team on her back and wills it to victory when that looks almost impossible. Abby is also a great role model for young fans and recently led the charge to get FIFA to use grass for this summer’s Women’s World Cup, as it does for men. Though she lost the battle, the fight sent a powerful message about equality in sports. Whether inspiring her team on the field or taking on important issues off it, Abby uses her passion and fearlessness to lead by example.

Team USA is poised to do amazing things at the World Cup. While I can’t predict what will happen, I know that under Abby, they will never quit.

Pretty excited (mainly for my daughter who has started watching more and more soccer) the only thing that pisses me off is that many of the games will be played on turf...

Tannehill is the greatest...(I say this for the safety of my family)

Concerning World Cup soccer, I actually enjoy watching the women's game more. The women (with the possible exception of Brazil) actually take pride in being tough as opposed to the men whom now embrace the pitch drama and flop more than WV.

Also, I don't understand how anyone can't appreciate the beauty of these women's athleticism.

USA: Stars and Stripes' goalscorers shine
Portland Thorns narrowly clung to top spot in the NWSL as USA’s national team players made varying contributions ahead of their upcoming final preparations for the Women’s World Cup in Canada. Stars and Stripes’ forward Christen Press scored an early double to have Chicago Red Stars on track for victory, only for the Thorns to secure a valuable point through goals from Canada skipper Christine Sinclair and Mana Shim. FC Kansas City saw off Seattle Reign thanks to a lone strike from USA veteran forward Amy Rodriguez as the pair met for the first time since last year’s championship decider, also won by the Midwestern side. Meanwhile, Washington Spirit moved into second with a 3-1 win at unbeaten Sky Blue FC, where Crystal Dunn made a statement with a two-goal showing having recently missed USA’s Canada 2015 squad.
Top three: Portland Thorns (7 points), Washington Spirit (6), Chicago Red Stars, Houston Dash, Sky Blue FC (all 4)
