Obama Awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize

    http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/europe...ize/index.html

President Obama was awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.

The first African-American to win the White House, Obama was praised by the Norwegian Nobel Committee for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."
It sounds like to me they gave him the prize because he's popular. Kind of like a yearbook superlative or the Heisman Trophy. I don't know that he's actually done anything to deserve it yet.

None the less, congratulations Mr. President!

That explains why he was ignoring his Generals requests for more troops in Afghanistan. He wanted to lock down the award first.

He should do what they say, when they say it. Actually, he should just hand control of the U.S. to the generals.

It doesn't seem like it is being warmly received.

I think this runs the risk of cheapening the award. I really don't know what they were thinking. He hasn't even been in office a year and most of his foreign policy work is still a work in progress. Bob Schieffer said it best this morning, "it seems like he won it simply because he was elected" (not the exact quote, said it about 5 minutes ago and I didn't write it down ).

I thought a Murdoch owned paper would be praising this decision.

You guys apparently didn't read the article completely. The deadline for nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize was 1 Feb 2009, which makes this more of a "WTF"????? President Obama was inauguated on 16 January 2009, so I guess in two weeks of his presidency, he did more to promote world peace in TWO WEEKS than anyone else in the previous 365 days.

Yea, you guys are right that he received the award for his popularity, but he had done NOTHING to deserve it...unless you call his European Campaign Apology Tour prior to the election substantial enough for him to receive the prize.

I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.

This is the biggest pile of BS ever. And makes the nobel prize worthless. How in the hell can someone who is continuing Bush's war policies win a peace award. Didn't the idiots at the Nobel committee see that Obama just sent 20,000 troops to Afghanistan escalating that war. And eventually will send tens of thousands more. Haven't they noticed that Obama is bombing Pakistan on a weekly basis? Haven't they noticed that civilians deaths have risen dramatically since his presidency? I can't believe this BS at all. This is just as insane as Bush's winning the nobel prize. War = Peace and get a prize for doing it.

No, I just don't get so worked up about things that really don't matter that much to me. I said I disagreed with the awarding. It doesn't make any sense, but I'm not going to go burn down some buildings and flip over cars because of it.

Its what you expect from political hacks. I dont think Obama deserves the award myself. Just something else on the pile for the flame throwers, who were nice and quiet for the last decade or two when this country was circling the drain a bit.
