How will the WH respond? I will be shocked if they take a hard stance.

I'm guessing the WH will link it to Bush. Bush was the master mind of 9/11.

Probably the same way every WH has responded over the past 50 years. Harsh words, scary scary sanctions.

Iraq was clearly the bigger threat.

I for see no aggressive response from the WH. Most likely they will condemn the attack and recommend sanctions. This sends a signal to North Korea that they can pretty much do what they want since our fears of them having developed nuclear warheads and the ability to deliver them. This is a situation that needs to be dealt with at some point but it seems that no administration really knows what to do.

Unfortunately, China is the key to the situation. They must rein in the North Korean aggression. Yet they've been less than stalwart partners of the west when North Korea acts up. Almost like a parent with a misbehaving child, they will drag their feet and continually make excuses for N. Korea's bad behavior, when they probably need to put the smack down on NK and maybe do some nation building of their own.

They won't be able to get any sanctions, IMO. Not with China holding veto power.

I think this is a sticky situation, and bears close monitoring....If the North is trying to start a war with the South(what else is the torpedoing of a ship, if not an act of war?), we will get dragged in.

The more I think about all our current foreign relations disasters, the more I think we should just pull back a little. We need to stop fighting every damn battle there is to fight. We have spread our resources too thin as it is, and now we have Iran and N. Korea to worry about. We should be focusing on OUR country, not the rest of the world.

It is a bad deal, no matter which way we go....

I think you guys are looking at this all wrong... I believe that this is a sign that the leash has been removed from kid gloving the North Koreans... if it is imminent that they are going to go nuclear, it is smarter to aallow South Korea to handle them now... only US pressure on China to manage their backyard (ie. North Korea) if they want a seat at the big boy's table of international relations has kept Pyongyang in relative quietude up to this point... it is time that they are addressed and I think this is a conceived catalyst... South Korea could have handled this in many ways less confrontational than this, and I believe their handling of it has purpose...
