    Looking back at past drafts

Looking back at the past 10 years of drafts, these are the number 1 all-over all picks

    ** = Probowl Selections

    2010 - Rams Sam Bradford
    2009 - Lions Matthew Stafford
    2008 - Dolphins Jake Long***
    2007 - Raiders JaMarcus Russel
    2006 - Texans Mario Williams**(*)
    2005 - 49ers Alex Smith
    -------------------------------------------
    2004 - Chargers Eli Manning*
    2003 - Bengals Carson Palmer**
    2002 - Texans David Carr
    2001 - Falcons Michael Vick****
    2000 - Browns Courtney Brown

Looking at this list, guys like Manning and Palmer have been franchise guys, Vick you could call a late bloomer but he really is on top right now. Stafford would be really good if he could stay on the field, Bradford is looking to have a great career but its still early there. If you look at all these 1st overall picks, and most of them are QB's, actually 8 of them are QB's, two are defensive Ends, and one is a left tackle, we sort of broke away from the mold there and it really did pay off. Should you address the first pick with the most important position in the NFL? maybe. we didnt and we got a HoF calliber player.

Its really hard to regret a move like that. 5 of those 8 QB's have turned out alright. How many of them are looking like the top of the position though? beyond top 10.. maybe 2. Long's undeniably a top 5 at his position. You could argue that none of those QB's are. what the future holds is a different topic. sam bradford could reinjure his arm and never play again or be the next coming. stafford could end up never playing a full season.

however, I think we have the best pick of the last decade. the '68 vikings and the '97 rams are the only other teams to pick a tackle with the first overall pick. Also its the only 1st overrall pick we've ever had and look what we got.. hard to argue matt ryan or joe flacco over jake long. he'll be remembered as one of the best LT's of this generation in 10 years from now

thats not Jake Longs fault that we had back to back 7-9 seasons... hes arguably the best LT in the NFL.... in hindsight, we probably should have taken Long and then traded our two 2nd rounders to take Joe Flacco (who is the same in quality as Ryan... dont believe me... look at the stats and the Weapons each have)

And there is always the question of how good would Ryan have been with us year 1 with no LT or a decent Oline at all. He could have been pummeled all year long, lost his confidence and turned into...well..Henne. =)
Just never know in these what if scenarios.

Totally agree...........Jake Long was a superb pick. We can argue over Matt Ryan but the Falcons have a solid O'line together with a solid running game. If Ryan (who I like a lot) had been here last year behind our interior line with no running game & Henning calling the shots.....I dont think he would have hit the 90 QBR.
    Draft
    1-WR-Marqise Lee
    2-DT-Louis Nix
    3-OG-Gabe Jackson
    4-QB-AJ McCarron
    5-DT-Daniel McCullers
    5-CB-Antone Exum
    6-OT-Antonio Richardson
    7-OT-Seantrel Henderson

I'd rather have Matt Ryan running for his life than Henned protected by Long

    Yep, that's my point.
A lot of times it's all about where a guy lands. Better teams produce better players. Back then our team could have ruined any of those QBs in that year's draft.
Sometimes I just really can't believe that we STILL don't have a QB. ugh
