South Florida was a bit of a shock. Here in NM, a huge portion of the state is bilingual, though the norm here is that you speak English primarily. Just a few days in South Florida and there was a bunch of spots where there was absolutely no expectation that anyone speak English. I know enough Spanish to do OK, but it was still a pretty significant change. I'm not sure which of you guys actually live in Miami, but props if you can do it without being proficient in Spanish. Cool city though...

If I could take your pain and frame it, and hang it on my wall,
maybe you would never have to hurt again...

You run into a similar problem in East Texas, only they are supposedly speaking English.

Growing up in South Florida, I expected pretty much everyone to speak at least some Spanish when I got to Texas. Heck, most of these "Mexicans" are tanned gringos! Most of the people here who speak Spanish are either older or they had a grandparent that insisted they learn to preserve their heritage. A lot of their families have been here since Texas was part of Mexico so that makes a huge difference as most Cubans in Miami are only second or third, maybe fourth, generation.

If you think that I am hard on immigrants, you should hear some of these old Mexican-Texans. They say lovely things about drowning the "wet-backs" in the Rio Grande and that they are ashamed of the "sorry Mexicans" as they give the rest of them a bad name. A few have made me blush, badly!

There were similar ****ty, self-loathing statements made by 1st wave Irish immigrants about the much poorer/desperate 2nd wave.

I don't know if anyone remembers the thread I made about an undercover police officer tricking an autistic high-school student into buying weed for him, but VICE made a documentary about it.

    I haven't seen it, yet. I imagine it's a pretty big bummer.

This is the story of Jesse Snodgrass, a kid with Aspergers Syndrome who was entrapped by an undercover cop posing as a student at Jesse's high school. This is the story of how the war on drugs preys on the most vulnerable.
