When Shula was Coach, who was the GM?

Hey, when Shula was the coach during the 1980's and 1990's, who was the GM? did he have full authority over signings and trades?

Yes, just to show you how important a GM is to a team, Bethard built the Dolphins, left in the late 70's early eighties.

If it wasn't for Marino saving us, we would have been pretty bad after that.

Oh, and Bethard went to Washington, and built their Superbowl Champion Teams.

don didnt take on full coach/gm repsonsabilities [bad move] untill i think 1985. bobby beathard was in charge of player aquisition from 72 to i think 1979.

for a good 4-5 years, george young [who went on to built the giants juggernaught] was bobby beathards go to guy heading up the scouting department.

joe thomas was the gm from the teams inception to 1971.

i think joe robbies son was the defacto gm from the time beathard left to when don talked joe robbie into giving him the ball of wax, and that started the dolphins slow decent with MANY bad draft pics.

so, as we SHOULD have learned, talent is the king and when you have folks who know it when they see it and go out and get them, you have winning, championship teams. those who dont, get blown out by the texans on opening day. you have a decade or more of futility and disapointment.
