This is why I think we need to let Long walk unless he's willing to take 5 or 6 mil a year which I doubt he'll want to do. If we use the tag on him, it'll cost 15 mill which leave us with 25mil. Starks who we must keep will cost 8 or 9 Hartline could cost 6 or 7(I want us to keep him) and Smith could cost another 5 or 6.So just those 3 players might cost us about 20million. You'll need another 5 just for the draft which we have 10 picks including 5 in the first 3 rounds so we might even need more than 5 and that'd put us right at the top of the cap. You still have Fasano and Bush and if they walk then we need yet another TE and maybe even a RB. Now if we do let Long walk we'd have those 15 mil to work with. You can draft a RT in round 2 or 3 for a fraction and keep Martin at LT.Now you can go after a guy like Wallace. But after him we might not have much left for anyone else. Now if we can get Starks, Hartline and Smith for around 16 or 17 instead of 20 you have a chance to get a couple of more guys but tagging Long will mean we wont get any top free agents at all. I know Philbin wants to built thru the draft but you need to use free agency too. We need a proven WR at the very least and maybe a TE. That'd set us up for the draft.

    Ozzy rules!!
They will not pay Starks anywhere close to that nor Hartline nor Smith. If that's where the bidding goes, they walk. You let Bush walk as well. You spend for Wallace and draft another WR, corner and DE high. Remaining cap money either goes to a CB, Long or a RT and move Martin permanently to LT.

We all know that is paramont. the fact of the matter is the Dolphins are going to be a better team next year IF the money are spent wisely. Too many scenerios:
On defense: sign your own players, starks and smith and a couple of free agents be it a corner and a de/olb.
On offense: Sign fasano/bush and let jake walk, get a top rate wr.
The only caveat is JIM IRELAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JJ never had a lot of money. Don Shula killed our cap in his last year (1995) by signing a gazillion firmer first round draft choices in order to force a Superbowl. When JJ came to town we paid former players for years while they were playing for other teams i.e. Brian Cox as a Bear and a Jet also received a paycheck from us. The one thing JJ was held back with was the cap killing shopping spree of 1999.

From what I have seen we have more than 40 mil and there is NO WAY we are franchising Jake. That would be beyond stupid. We also are very likely to let Bush walk, certainly not going to give him some obsurd amount. We can sign Starks, Smith, Fasino, offer Jake 7-8 mil per yr for 3 or 4 yrs and still have 15 mil left. Jake isn't getting long term elite LT money. Not from us and not from anyone else.

The franchise tag for a RB is only $7.7 million. I'd prefer not to sign Bush to a long term contract, but I certainly wouldnt mind keeping him for 1 more year.

The Dolphins will have closer to 50 mill in cap space..but most of that will be used to keep our own guys, im not expecting us to go sign any big name free agent, nor do i want us too.
Jake Long 5/60 10-12 mill per
Randy Starks 4/28 5-7 mill per
Sean Smith 4/28 5-7 mill per
Reggie Bush 4/16 4 mill per
Brian Hartline 4/20 4-6 mill per
Anthony Fasano 2/7 3.5 mill per
    Chris Clemons 1/3 mill

That's takes up about 35 mill of the cap which leaves around 15 mill for the draft and to fill depth in free agency, attack our needs (WR, DB, Pass rusher, WR, TE, DB, DT, QB, OL, OL) through the draft in that order.

Miami will have in excess of $50M in cap space next year. The cap will remain about the same as this year, which means that you can expect some cap cuts on good players. On the other side, the new CBA makes it mandatory for teams to spend 90% of the cap, which means some smaller market teams will have to spend.

The new TV deals go into effect in 2014, and contracts can be back loaded with that in mind with a cap increase almost assured.

Our Dolphins can easily sign their own, and a high priced FA or two, IF they choose to do so.

That Reggie Bush deal looks bad to me. He will be 32 yrs old in the final year of his contract, I doubt he will be healthy. Jake Long should not get a long term deal from this team, after this season he should either get the franchise tag or be allowed to walk.

Everything else looks fine except I don't think we are going to resign Starks. I think we have to kick Odrick inside, and get a real DE to play opposite Wake.

That sound like a good plan to me.

What level of Compensenatory pick should the Dolphins expect if Long signs with another team? I know they go as high as a 3rd, but could the Dolphins actually let Long walk & get a draft pick in the process?

There is absolutely NO WAY that Hartline commands 6-7 million on the open market! Not even close. Smith will not get 5-6 Million per year either. STarks ont he other hand swill cost some dough and you're probably right with the 8-9 assessment there. If the other two want anything more than 4.5-5 just let them go. Neither are consistent and while it would add holes to fill at least we wouldn't be severely overpaying for them.
