Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life
Most of the reason to own an assault rifle for most people is the cool factor. They are practical for some people however- my friends who take their boats offshore or to the Bahamas like to have them to scare off pirates for example. I own a few guns but no semi-auto rifles because its not practical for me personally.
My main problem with whatever new law is coming is that it's using the tragedy to advance a politicial agenda. Before Newtown, support for banning so called assault weapons was below 50% and now it is just barely over. Ill oppose this reckless legislation on principle and urge everyone else to do the same.
I know what you mean though. Ive been on and off in the commercial fishing industry for years now and out at sea is a different animal from dry land as far as security goes. No cops. No alarms. No dogs. Miles away from land. Definitely almost necessary to have a gun if your actually anchoring out at sea far away from dry land for the night.
I just remembered that the first boat I ever worked on one summer back when I was still in HS had an AR-15 or something similar in the pilot house. They told me they actually used it once. Some big messy situation that started with an argument over a lobster condo and came to the other dudes pointing a gun at the guys on the boat I worked on. That did not end well for them. I swear to god, our boat has more guns than your typical village in Afghanistan. Insane. They ended up sinking the other big craft after it came to try bail out their people who did the hold up. All parties ended up in court for various things. Apparently kidnapping is frowned upon but at the same time shooting up a boat so bad it sinks is also illegal lol.
But yeah, I definitely wouldnt like being out at sea for 3 or 4 weeks in the middle of nowhere with no guns. And Im someone that would never own a gun on land for safety reasons.
