The bigger risk for JI is blowing the $47m on free agents who don't perform. I'm pretty confident that with all the draft picks we will get some good players but he needs to make some good calls in free agency or the money will be wasted. Consider that he has effectively been buying some expensive FAs every year since arriving and most of them have been duds (Karlos Dansby and Randy Starks obvious exceptions). Good luck this year Jeff .

we should also get more insight into his first two drafts as head man: mike pouncey, daniel thomas, charles clay, jimmy wilson, ryan tannehill, jonathan martin, michael egnew, olivier vernon, lamar miller, josh kaddu, kheeston randall, and rishard matthews.
Everyone's philosophy is building through the draft. That's nothing new. As far as judging the drafts two or three years down the road, If Hartline, Long, Smith, and Clemmons walk, our entire draft classes from 2008 and 2009 will be gone.

Thats easy. They'll say but look at all the talent he brought in, obviously all those new Dolphins need more than a year to gel.

Since 2005, the Dolphins have picked in the top 10 of the first round four times, including the #1 overall in 2008 and the #2 overall in 2005. If Long is gone this year, then Tannehill is the only player drafted in one of those slots who will still be with the team. With as many high draft picks as this team wastes, it's actually a minor miracle that they're mired in mediocrity as opposed to topping out at 2 to 3 wins a year.

Smart money says they will declare it was Bill Parcells fault.

Im also guessing one or two posters will declare its Mike Shermans fault. Not because of scheme, thats to obvious, but because he chained Ireland to the radiator during the draft and Ireland just got full control back 2 minutes ago.

to varying extents. some teams rarely add free agents (green bay), other teams sign them like it's going out of style. everybody would like to build through the draft, and they may even say they build through the draft themselves, but the extent to which they rely on free agency to build their teams is apparent in their actions.

He should do OK because philbin will ensure we draft playmakers. that all comes from philbin. I am more concerned about who ireland can sign in FA and whether they pan out. If he limits the number and raises the quality then he should be fine.

the key to the FA period is whether he can convince Long to resign at reasonable price.

Sorry to be jumping on the bandwagon, but I don't trust JI at all. Hopefully Philbin will be influencing the FA and draft picks more than JI will. Ireland should have been fired 2+ years ago. Why the owner has continuously absolved him of any of the bad decisions for the past 4-5 years, I have no idea. People try to give him credit for Tanny last year . .. . . does anyone really think JI had anything to do with that?
