    Margus Hunt

    http://www.cbssports.com/collegefoot...llege-football

    1. Margus Hunt, SMU, DE/KB: The native of Estonia sounds like a PlayStation football creation: A 6-foot-8, 280 pounder with an 82-inch wingspan. Yet despite those long arms, he can still bench 225 35 times, and his coach, SMU track coach Dave Wollman, predicts Hunt will rep it 45 times next year at the NFL combine and clock a 4.60 40-yard dash. Hunt has cleaned 384 pounds, snatched 345 and vertical jumped 36 inches. "He's off-the-scale powerful," said Wollman. "On that kind of frame, seeing the cleans and the snatch go that high to the ceiling, it is amazing."

what do you guys think I know he is extremely raw but imagine how big of an impact blocking a potential game winning field goal can be... and the potential to swat passes like jj watt... he is extremly coordinated for being 6-8 280

Well you can't teach 6'8 and long with speed. But, he doesn't look like a good football player to me. He lacks functional core strength and you see him getting manhandled regularly in the run game. No way he can play DT. As an end he has some quicks and some speed, but he doesn't have elite explosion or a great first step. I don't really see pass rush skills, no bend or running the arc, no club, no swim, nothing special. He appears very good at inside pass rushing but it seems very situational. I would call him a developmental player at best. I want to see a diamond in the rough, but what I see are a fraction of the skill and strength needed to be an NFL player. JJ Watt down the road? I just don't see it.

Watch the 2011 Texas A&M video. It's glaring how he appears to be a 1 trick pony. What stands out when you watch all his plays are his kick-blocking ability and then lots of impressive plays by ... Ryan Tannehill and Ryan Swope. If anything, Tannehill and Swope are the guys that jump out at me.

    Here's the game:

the only comparison to watt was that bc of his knack for blocking kicks maybe he could pick up tipping passes.. I think Hunt would be a 4-3 D End but he needs to develop for 2 years before he can make an impact besides PAT/Field goal D

Lacks functional core strength? Lmao. That couldn't be further from the truth. Knock him for his technique and lack of leverage if he's getting "thrown around". Margus is a beast. And if Dave Wollman thinks he'll rep it 40 times, it's probably because Margus has done it already. Can't believe they quoted coach wollman lol.

you don't draft that kid to play dt...you may give him some shift inside nickle run though with his length and quickness...and i'll disagree wholeheartedly with any he doesn't have initial burst and explosion off the ball with his hand in the dirt talk...for his size he has terrific get off and burst...he gets off the ball damn well...

his real issues are he's straight linish doesn't redirect well in space...and he may be too tall to ever be stout enough at the poa...thus i'd project him initially at least as a situational pass rusher and shift inside rotational guy...and once he learns to get his hands up when he can't get to the qb at that size he's gonna volleyball passes...

the one thing i didn't know when i was watching his stuff is that he was already 26 years old...that will no doubt hurt his draft value...it's not a qb this is an overaged positional player that in a lot of regards is pretty raw...but you can't teach his get off his burst and the way he comes out of his stance off the edge at that length and size...
hoops scoops 2012 season ..."in 2014 ryan tannehill etches his name in stone amongst the games elite qbs"..."ryan tannehill and andrew luck will carry the afc for the next decade plus the way peyton manning and tom brady have this last decade plus"

At 26 years old I'm not sure we should be referring to him as "that kid".

And that's kind of the crux of this whole thing with Margus Hunt, too. Last year I remember the arguments against Weeden saying he's literally a man amongst boys out there so of course he should look good. I didn't understand that argument as it pertained to a quarterback. I thought and said it would be a great argument to make against a defensive or offensive lineman, someone playing the game very physically and taking advantage of undeveloped young men.

This is that exact hypothetical situation.

Watching this video of Margus, people are going to cream themselves for the guy and it's totally understandable. He's thoroughly dominating, to the point Fresno State has to start putting a **** ton of extra attention on him.

But consider that this is a 26 year old, Olympic caliber MAN...going against an 18 year old BOY who 12 months ago was going to prom, an unheralded no-star recruit ranked as the #735th best prospect in the state of California.

At that point, that kind of takes a little bit of the shine off a performance like that.

I think Hunt has plenty of get-off from the blocks but it's what he does after that, that is important. When he faces better competition it seems like he's always weeded up. No flexibility, raw hand use, stops moving his feet, etc. I think you could forgive all that since he would still be an intriguing pass rusher from the interior on nickel downs, except he's not yet aware or good against the run...so you're looking at a 3rd down pass rush specialist from DT, until he gets better against the run. He's definitely intriguing but I can't help but feel like he's going to be limited.
