Sean smith not close to deal?

Sean Smith - DB - Dolphins
Per the Palm Beach Post, the Dolphins and impending free agent CB Sean Smith are "far apart" on contract talks.
Smith is said to be seeking a deal similar to the one Jason McCourty received from the Titans in August -- six years, $43 million, $20 million guaranteed. Miami is reportedly valuing Smith at a much lesser amount. The Dolphins will have until March 9 to negotiate with their long, physical corner, but it's almost certain that Smith will test the free-agent market.

If this is true, and Ireland sticks to his guns, best news I've read in weeks.
God bless, I'll hang up and listen.

That's OK if he wants top talent money. I do not mind paying him as a starter but he has been to up and down to be considered elite. I would pay him a bit more than a starter because we are thin and then let him walk and use the draft to rebuild the secondary

Losing smith is going to be a major blow to the defense, he still has a long ways to go but he has developed into a solid corner. Wasnt there an article saying we were going to franchise him? He is no deoin sanders but a solid physical corner that has developed well you dont wanna lose him, add in the fact that for the last few seasons he has been the most durable healthy player on our defense, vontae was always hurt but not smith. Losing smith only creates a major hole on the team, right now we are set to be able to draft another Elite pass rusher to pair with cam wake, we need to continue to move forward, not backwards.

    Lock up
    smith
    Starks

anyone else is expendable but those 2 we cant lose.

Still early in the negotiations. Honestly I'm a little surprised, thought he would seek Cortland Finnegan money which is closer to 10 million a year. He is seeking 8 million a year, we are probably offering 4-5. I expect a reasonable compromise of 4 yr 24 million.

I mean the average is around 7 million a year . . . they gave Richard Marshall 5.5 a year . . . I don't see where this is unreasonable at all. It's not like he's asking for Cortland Finnegan money at 5 years and 50 million a year. I guess the 20 million guaranteed is a bit high but still this isn't as unreasonable as people are going to make it out to be.
