    Hard Knocks Hindsight

In looking back for better or worse, did Hard Knocks ave any effect on the Dolphins team this past season? A few things to consider.

John Jerry got his ass kicked by our Marine OL coach and played pretty well, a good thing.

Chad was showcased, and fell by the wayside, a questionable thing.

Egnew was embarrassed by Sherman, and is still looking for an apartment to replace the Dog House.

Philbin had some good, in the mid field turnaround in watching plays, and some bad, in appearing a little wussy in handling cuts and the VD trade.

Overall good, bad, or indifferent? I loved it but, don't know if doing it again is a VG idea.

Most teams don't like the idea of having the cameras around them 24 hours a day throughout camp. A lot of teams won't even allow the idea of going on the show. I think it was a poor idea to have the show there in Philbin's first year. There's enough on his plate and enough adjusting to do, and the last thing he needs is that distraction. The same is said for Ryan Tannehill. Rookie season for a guy we hope can turn the franchise around; a guy we are hoping to build around. There's enough pressure for any QB coming here because they will always be compared to Marino. There's also pressure to "do what Dan didn't do" and win a Super Bowl. I definitely don't think having Hard Knocks there helped, but when you look at the season as a whole, I don't believe it had enough of an impact to really sway the season in either direction. This is kind of where I think most people had us pegged anyway.

Good point. I forgot about Tanny, and all the attention it added to his wife from the show. That had to be somewhat of a distraction.

I'm pretty sure she's a distraction for him all the time, lol. I can imagine a few practices in college that resembled the scene in "The Replacements" when Reaves gets drilled while checking out a cheerleader.

loved the show .didnt care 4 Chads actions ,wasnt sure what to think of Phiblin and was impressed by some of the things he said.
not sure if it had a big effect on the players other than a few ball busting after the show aired.it was more for the fans than the team.so i would say as a dolphin an we wone out

I don't know if it helped us at all, but I don't think it hurt us from a performance or personnel point of view. If we were going to lose Chad Johnson, better to have it during pre-season than during the season. I'd say what turned Jerry around was work, not hard knocks, but who knows. Turner was about to give up on him and instead tried using him in every snap ... who woulda thunk it that forcing tons of reps on a guy too lazy to practice on his own might improve his technique, stamina and weight issues? Kinda straight forward there IMHO.

Egnew failed in season 1, but I can't say whether Hard Knocks contributed to that or not, so I'll leave that one out. Confidence is a big issue, and the show surely hurt his confidence I'd guess, but it seems he had a lot of other issues too, like blocking, strength, route running, and adjusting to the team.

I thought Philbin came accross as a good guy. High attention to detail, accessable but always in-charge, required a high degree of work ethic and dignity. He showed that he's open to everyone competing for a position and that he listens to his position coaches. So, if a player impresses his position coach, he can earn playing time. Was he Johnny Charisma or Iron Fist Ike? No, but he came accross as a good coach that is smart, successful and someone for which players would like to play.

All in all, I think what mainly resulted from Hard Knocks was fan interest and media coverage for a team that was starved for both. So, that's a good thing.

Agreed, best part of the show.

I'll be honest. The football side of me says it's an awful idea to have that kind of distraction around during a coaching turnover.
But the fan side of me was enraptured throughout the series. Even my neighbor who's a Seahawks fan thought it was really cool and insightful.
I think it would be ideal if EVERY team had something like this every year, organized by NFL Films or something, but not run it until after camp is over. That way it's fair to all the teams since they know everyone else has a camera crew as well, and the fans get to see all the great behind-the-scenes stuff that we love.
