The Truth about why MetLife is getting a SB, and Miami will never get one until...

I read this article today and I think it explains it best.

The next Super Bowl will return football’s championship showcase to its western Pennsylvania coal miner's roots, outdoors with the possibility of elements—cold weather, ice, and snow—impacting the game, which is scheduled for Feb. 2, 2014, in East Rutherford, NJ.

The NFL's real reason, though officially unstated, for choosing the Meadowlands site is all about money. NFL owners "reward" communities that put up money for new facilities and the owners. NFL owners no longer have a rotation set of warm-weather cities such as Miami, Tampa, New Orleans, San Diego, or Pasadena/Los Angeles that automatically host games.

Miami is out until Miami-Dade or Broward County or the state spends taxpayer dollars to either upgrade the area’s existing stadium, or build a new one.

League owners awarded the 2004 and 2006 bowls to Houston and Detroit because taxpayers funded new stadiums in those cities. The Valley of the Sun, the Phoenix metropolitan area, hosted the 2008 game after voters said yes to funding a facility in Glendale, Arizona. Arlington, Texas, was rewarded with the 2011 game after local residents agreed to pay for half of Jerry Jones’s new Dallas Cowboys stadium by approving a local sales tax hike. Indianapolis got the 2012 Super Bowl after local politicians agreed to fund a new stadium. Some of these deals give local owners virtually all (92 percent) of the stadium-generated revenues from every event in the building. It is assumed that the new stadium in Santa Clara, California, which will house the San Francisco 49ers in a couple of years, will get a Super Bowl, since Santa Clara residents are spending hundreds of millions of dollars for that facility.

No wonder NFL owners are putting "The Big Game" in different cities. It is an easy thank-you for locals who are footing stadium costs.

    --------------------------------------

Basically, the NFL is using the Super Bowl as a way to force taxpayers to reward cities that use taxpayer money to build stadiums, and punish the cities that don't.

Definitely some truth to that, and I really dont disagree with the method of rewarding citizens who pay the bill with a super bowl.

No doubt these "rewards" result in mega-infusions of spending .. however let's see if those "citizens" who voted the billionaire owners a free ride while they continue to get hosed with increasing admission, parking and concession prices which were already exhorbitant see the benefits of their collective spending translate into lower state income or sales taxes, or decreases in the costs of public transportation or conveyances like toll bridges, tunnels and turnpikes.

What ever happened to the concept of investment spending to make money instead of suckling on the public tit? From both a revenue and equity build standpoint, owning an NFL team is a license to print money. If the league office was truly egalitarian instead of being the owners puppets, pressure would rightfully be brought to bear on thei owners, not the municipalities that enrichen them.

They have been doing it for years, it's how Indianapolis got a SB last year, Ford Field got one a few years earlier(I know Pontiac hosted in jan '82 but they were never going back there), Houston and now MetLife. If Miami builds a new state of the art Stadium or of his renovation goes through they will host every few years. if we had put a roof on our new Stadium we'd get it every few years.

The real reason why the Met Life is getting the Super Bowl this year is because the Jets will be in the Super Bowl.
Rex Ryan promised..... Oh wait that was every year before this. This year he know he has no chance.

Sorry Junc, had to poke some fun. LOL.

Definitely need a new stadium if you want to host the big game. Just how it works now.

Awarding cities that build new stadiums with Super Bowls hasn't been any big secret.

Seems like a perfectly fair way of doing things really.

Exactly, which is why Santa Clara is going to beat Miami for this SB bid. The new Minnesota stadium will be hosting a Super Bowl within 5 years of it's existence too.
