Obama Pushes for Higher Minimum Wage on Plant Tour

President Barack Obama pushed for a higher minimum wage at a re-opened manufacturing plant Wednesday because he says Americans who work full time should not be in poverty.
The president followed up his call for the increase from $7.25 to $9 an hour in Tuesday night's State of the Union address with a trip to North Carolina, attempting to reach voters outside Washington on the plan
Canadian-based Linamar Corp. opened a former Volvo plant in Asheville that had gone dark and rehired some of its workers. Obama touted it as an example of America attracting jobs from overseas.
He says the key to reviving America's economy is to bring more jobs to the United States, give Americans the skills they need to perform them and provide those workers with a decent living.
"There's no magic bullet here, it's just some common sense stuff. People still have to work hard," he said, arguing that just a few structural changes could have an outsize impact. He said he needs Congress to help pass his initiatives.
"It's not a Democratic thing or a Republican thing," Obama said. "Our job as Americans is to restore that basic bargain that says if you work hard, if you meet your responsibilities, you can get ahead."
"If you work full time, you shouldn't be in poverty," Obama said to applause.

I hate this guy. Poor people need exactly this. Poor people need more money to waste on booze cigarettes and lottery tickets. That's wonderful Bacrock. Minimum wage nobodies need more money so that they can get all liqoured up on a week night and then lay out of work the next day. Here's more money mr poor person. You don't have to work for it. Go ahead and upgrade to the 18 pack of Bud.

This is actually kind of ingenious.

Some companies will absorb the cost of higher wages by raising prices or cutting costs elsewhere. Others will cut costs by laying off employees. Those people will go on unemployment and might end up on other handout programs. People who owe their livelihood to the government overwhelmingly vote Democrat.

More people unemployed = more people on the dole = more Democratic voters.

For the most part, minimum wage is a starting/training wage for a job, not a career. If minimum wage jobs are a serious career option for you then there's likely more to your story. If you're worth more then you demonstrate that to your boss and he pays you more or you look for different job. Unfortunately, not everyone is worth minimum wage. Not by a long shot. Not everyone has the ability or intrinsic motivation to focus and work efficiently and accurately for more than a few minutes.

Everyone wants more money. It's how we expect to get it that exposes our differences. Some of us look to work for it, a few of us try to gamble for it, and others look for the government to get it for us.

Again you are right on the mark! Here here! Working 40 hours a week for minimum wage isn't really working at all! When will the rest of the country see reason? Communists and fascists everyone of them!

There was a time when those working full time for minimum wage, and not having their income supplemented with tips, were either a new workers or poor workers.

In our current economy many minimum wage workers might be people with few options who are too proud not to work.

Ya but why on earth would we give such lazy bastards more money? They're not going to spend the extra money on stuff I want or that I approve of anyway. Wouldn't we be better off just doing away with min wage all together so that we could compete with China?

You do understand the one of the basic premise of the free market is establishing value dont you? Why should a fry guy at McDonalds demand the same wage as the salesman at HH Gregg? The HH Gregg guy establishes his worth to the company buy selling...a direct result of his wages should be determined by his talent and drive to make more for the company so they can pay him more for his labors. He establishes his worth.
The fry guy.....fries frys.....he is a cog in a machine. He doesnt add to the bottom line as much as he maintains it. Personally, neither is better than the other, but to the companies, one is more valuable than the other.

I never understand why people dont get such a basic fact of business. I had a boss one time that explained it this way.....I have to sell twice what im worth for the company to pay me half of what im worth. Smart companies value their employees, even the drones. But they also understand the need for production and what value does an employee have for the company.

    This is absolutely correct!

It is none of my business what they spend their money on but I can assure you that no company is going to just absorb a 24% increase in wages without cutting a commensurate amount of staff and expecting a lot more fun the people that are left. The value of a dollar worth if work won't change, only the number of employees and the amount of work assigned to each individual employee will change.
