    Domestic Drones

The Federal Aviation Administration announced Thursday that it is seeking proposals from states, universities and other organizations for six sites where unmanned aircraft systems will be tested – a major step for integrating domestic drones into the U.S. airspace system.

“Our focus is on maintaining and improving the safety and efficiency of the world’s largest aviation system,” Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement Thursday. “This research will give us valuable information about how best to ensure the safe introduction of this advanced technology into our nation’s skies.” ----

“It’s unknown at this point,” Gerald Dillingham, director of Physical Infrastructure Issues at the Government Accountability Office, said at a Science, Space and Technology House subcommittee Friday. “From our perspective, that’s one of the big obstacles to integration – that is public acceptance, public education, public concern about how their data will be used.”

“American public are just frightened frankly about the use of UAS to possibly have invasions of their privacy and invasions of their civil rights and I’m extremely interested in making sure that we protect those privacy issues and civil rights issues,” Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight for the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, said.

“We have to at least figure out who the go to person is in the administration so that it doesn’t fall through the cracks,” Rep. Dan Maffei, D-N.Y., ranking member of the subcommittee, said.

The FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 required the FAA establish test sites for domestic drones by the end of 2012, a deadline which the agency missed as it assessed privacy concerns, as well as the full integration of unmanned aircraft systems into U.S. airspace by September 2015, which FAA views as a starting point.

    Texas Student Hacks DHS Drone:

There are a lot of cool things you can do with $1,000, but scientists at an Austin, Texas college have come across one that is often overlooked: for less than a grand, how’d you like to hijack a drone?

A group of researchers led by Professor Todd Humphreys from the University of Texas at Austin Radionavigation Laboratory recently succeeded in raising the eyebrows of the US government. With just around $1,000 in parts, Humphreys’ team took control of an unmanned aerial vehicle owned by the college, all in front of the US Department of Homeland Security.

After being challenged by his lab, the DHS dared Humphreys’ crew to hack into a drone and take command. Much to their chagrin, they did exactly that.

Humphrey tells Fox News that for a few hundreds dollar his team was able to “spoof” the GPS system on board the drone, a technique that involves mimicking the actual signals sent to the global positioning device and then eventually tricking the target into following a new set of commands. And, for just $1,000, Humphreys says the spoofer his team assembled was the most advanced one ever built.

Lol. This is one of the problems with this country, we think we have it all figured out. I was watching the Bond film SkyFall this weekend and by chance Casino Royal was also on so I was talking with my son and said "you know what would make a perfect nemesis for a new Bond flim, a poor, super intelligent person set on only anarchy and not money or global domination".

The thought being is that Bond is so polished and upper class with his black tie affairs that a poor slums based terrorist with domestic roots and a sort of evil Robin Hood flair would be the polar opposite of Bond.

Point being for a thousand bucks you can bet someone like this is already trying to hack into a drone and by the sounds of it, it is likely to happen sooner rather than later.

Tom Clancy already wrote a Jack Ryan novel about this, with the Chinese hacking our drones and using them against us as part of a plan to hijack Taiwan and S.Korea.

And i believe someone on this forum discussing drone strikes against US citizens said it wouldnt happen here on our soil, only abroad. Can anyone really feel safe making that promise about this government?
