I love the flashback method for hitting the points in Clark's childhood. It gave you the gist of he went through without being to melodramatic. Well done.
Had sad is the Kryptonian civilization? They spread out to the stars only to decide to scale all of that back leaving all of their colonies to fend for themselves and eventually die. They exhausted their resources and never thought to go back out to the stars again. The advanced screening tickets I got had a code on it that gave you access to a website that had a digital comic telling the story of how one of Kal-El's ancestors was the captain of that seed ship that crashed in Northern Canada. Pretty cool little back story.
Michael Shannon is outstanding as Zod. However the terraforming was a bit puzzling. Why would you terra-form a planet and take away the elements that are giving you super powers? It seemed kind of stupid to me.
To me the movie needed just a shade more humor. Nothing Donner-like, but just a touch more. Lois is the most competent that character has ever been. She needed more spunk, perhaps a quip or two at Jor-El as his computer image is leading her through Zod's ship? Maybe a quip from Chris Miloni's character at the female Kryptonian. Maybe I'm trying to "Marvel" it up a too much.
