GRUSHCOW'S DREAM DRAFT
Alright so this is my third draft in three days, this one looks at my dream scenario (others were trades and no trades aim to be realistic). This is essentially the guys I like going where I think they will/a tad lower for some. My philosophy is to add some bigger guys in our receiving core and defensive backfield respectively, while drafting players who can fill in for our FA class in 2014. I understand all of these guys falling into each slot is pushing it, but I think there's an alright chance that any of these guys can go in the draft range I have them pegged. So without further ado, this is how I would put the team together building up to Week 1. Cheers, hope you guys enjoy.
1) Dolphins trade down with Cowboys, Dolphins receive #18, #80, #174, Cowboys receive #12 overall pick and select Kenny Vaccaro.
2) Trade Davone Bess for a 2014 5th round pick.
3) Dolphins package picks #217 and #224 for a 2014 6th round draft pick.
(We will also sign Eric Winston post draft)
1. 18. Tyler Eifert | TE | Notre Dame
First of all, why the trade with the Cowboys makes sense. It's Jerry Jones, if he wants someone he goes and gets them. He can really fall in love with some secondary prospects and a homegrown talent like Vaccaro seems like a match made in heaven. The Panthers, Saints, Rams and Steelers are all in play for Vaccaro so they would have to jump to 12 or 13 to give themselves a shot at him. This allows us to trade down and get our guy, in a perfect world I'd have us grab Tavon just because I consider him an elite talent in this draft, but I just don't see him making it to 12. Eifert brings something that Tavon doesn't and something we lack in our new look offense, a redzone weapon. As a Dolphin fan we all know the pain and anguish we've endured within the red-zone over the years and I'm tired of coming away with field goals. Eifert will fix that and I've come around to the fact there is a good chance he will be our pick (and one that will please me). With Fasano out of town we need a guy who can high point the football and Eifert's that guy.
2. 42. Johnthan Banks | CB | Mississippi State
My draft strategy this year as I mentioned is to help the pass defense. On top of that it is an absolute must that like with offense we can taller in the secondary. Banks is another guy who was a likely first round pick during the draft process and has tremendous length. I think he can step in day 1 and compete, playing the role Sean Smith did, except not like a plastic bag fluttering in the wind. Banks is a forgotten man right now in a draft riddled with talented corners. If D.J. Hayden falls (which I find virtually impossible) he'd be the guy. Same with Jamar Taylor or Desmond Trufant.
2. 54. Damontre Moore | DE | Texas A&M
For a guy who was considered a top 10 selection at the beginning of the draft process, getting him in the middle of the second round is a gift. I know a lot of people don't like him but if he can dedicate himself he could come away as one of the top pass rushers in the draft. The fact that he will likely be here alters my draft plans from Tank Carradine in the first and gives us a guy who can match up across from from the left tackle in a fulltime role. His Texas A&M connection can only help and I think he's a real possibility come draft day. Pass defense would be my focus this draft, and getting after the passer is the best way for David to defeat Goliath (for those who aren't current with Roman literature).
3. 77. John Jenkins | NT | Georgia
Jenkins is just flat out a great value here. There's great depth at NT and with Soliai in a contract year, grooming his replacement would be wise. We have an in house replacement for Starks in Odrick, so targeting a big run stuffer should be where we go and getting a guy like this in the 3rd is a perfect fit. This is a classic BPA and sets us up with a cheap contract to ease us into the 2014 season. I can't guarantee he will be here but in a deep NT class someone will be worthy of this pick (Brandon Williams maybe).
3. 80. David Amerson | CB/S | North Carolina State
Again I'm looking for guys who slipped through the cracks, and Amerson's poor senior season has knocked him out of the first round discussion. He is being projected in the 3rd in most mocks, which I think is exceptional value. He gives us flexibility in the secondary and could be a candidate to be shifted to FS and push Clemons year one and cover tight ends in certain packages. Amerson is a flat out playmaker and with some structure could pair with Banks or slot in next to Reshad and form a fearsome safety duo.
3. 82. Dallas Thomas | OL | Tennessee
I understand it's unrealistic to wait on offensive line without the acquisition of Albert considering a signing of Winston would likely come following the draft, but as long as we shell out the money for a FA tackle we can build around our secondary and pass rush. Thomas is battled tested in the SEC and has moved around the line during his time at Tennessee profiling as more of a guard. I think he fits and can be groomed behind Cog as our future at LG. It's all about affordable contracts next year people, so we have to plan around a lot of our future FA's with most of our needs met.
4. 111. Da'Rick Rogers | WR | Tennessee Tech
The common theme here is size and speed. Rogers has his share of off the field issues but in the 4th round I would take a shot on his talent. We need a Brandon Marshall type guy in Hartline's slot when we're ready to cut him loose and having an option like Rogers gives us another red-zone weapon if he develops. You take a chance on talent and Rogers has it. If he's not there a guy like Chris Harper would be a nice fit too.
5. 146. Zac Stacy | RB | Vanderbilt
Zac Stacy is a legitimate sleeper, he could go anywhere from the 4th-7th and he brings a lot of MOJO qualities to the field. We need some thunder to Lamar's lighting and Thomas is as good as done as far as I'm concerned and he's been immensely disappointing. This gives us a two-headed attack with interesting options of Thigpen and Gray filling out the depth chart.
5. 166. Ricky Wagner | OT | Wisconsin
You gotta love Wisconsin linemen, especially a guy this late who has the feet to play left tackle. He's more likely a guy I would groom behind Winston but his strength is pass protection and that's what we need out of our tackles.
6. 174. Keith Pough | OLB | Howard (from Cowboys)
Even with all the signings at linebacker, we don't have a lot of depth. Pough fits the bill as an athletic, blitzing linebacker and would fit into our defense nicely once he gets his feet wet at the next level.
7. 250. Zach Rogers | WR | Tennessee
I fit Josh Boyce into my last mock but he won't be available this late, Rogers is another guy who will fall on draft day but his talent warrants a selection. He could be our heir to replace Bess next season and the way I have it we jettison Bess anyway. If we have Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Keller and Eifert on the field at once we should be just fine.
UFA: Zach Brown | K | Portland
We found Carpenter as a UFA and I think we will target his eventual replacement there as well.
Post draft/training camp:
Sign Eric Winston, 1 year @ 3 million.
Cut K Dan Carpenter
Cut RB Daniel Thomas
Cut LS John Denney (obviously only if Scales proves adequate)
Cut CB Richard Marshall, my thinking for this is that Marshall is a better boundary corner, but with two draft picks with potential to play the outside Patterson becomes more valuable as a slot corner. I'd almost consider keeping both with a Patterson restructuring.
I would also shift Odrick inside (on passing downs at the very least) because I don't like what he offers on the outside. When next FA comes around he can play the role of Starks and Jenkins can play the role of Soliai ideally.
