Interjecting some history, not surprisingly from the annals of Florida's politics
The Florida Senatorial campaign of 1950 Rep george smathers running vs incumbent Sen. claude pepper.
smathers, the underdog, decided on a smear campaign and focused his attacks against pepper with the mostly uneducated floridians in the central and northern part of the state.
......and it worked. smathers won.
These are some of the attacks on printed material to get the voters to vote against pepper:
* pepper's brother was a "practicing homosapien"
* he had a sister in NY who was a "thespian"
* also, pepper himself had "matriculated" with young women.
finally, smathers jumped on the Mc Carthy anti-communism bandwagon too and gave pepper the nickname "Red" Pepper.
You can imagine how horrified those folks in florida were at the time hearing about homosapiens, thespians and a man running for office having matriculated.
