Terrible pick, made even worse by the trade up to get him!

The trade I most definitely have an issue with... The player not so much. I think he can be good.

I just think the trade up was not necessary and the value was off. Davis would have been there with 104.... We gave away the 4th, 5th and 7th for 11 spots up... Not good value at all...

Seems to have good instincts for knowing when to get behind a blocker to avoid a tackle... Good for a RB , not so much for a CB

Sometimes Davis looks like a natural; sometimes he looks pretty raw. Obviously, his tackling is terrible. Makes X. Rhodes look like D. Hayden in that regard. Davis has a ton of upside. Has the feet, hips, and balls skills to be an All Pro. Lot of work to do to get there, and he might never, but given the Davis' upside, I'm good with the pick. Is the pick ideal? Imo, no. But it's consistent with what Ireland and Philbin have done the last two years. Get guys whose physical talent and character dictates an earlier pick - but who need significant development. Lot of pressure on the coaches to get them there. This year will be an indicator as to how well that plan works.

Last year we did the same with guys like Vernon and kaddu, this year those guys are expected to do much more. when they asked philbin who he was most excited about out of last years rookie class his answer was Kaddu.

I really like this staff doesn't reach for players they don't love at certain draft spots, instead they grab high upside projects that with time can be much bigger contributors. I think that's what we have with will Davis.
Great post. I do the same thing with my baseball teams. I take the best available athletes in our later rounds of the draft and coach them up. The key is that you must know that they are coachable by interviewing them, the other factors are that they are not be lazy or lacking in intelligence our the project will never take hold..

This pick tell me the coaching staff isn't planning on going anywhere for a couple of years and Ross feels the same. Drafting guys like Davis makes you believe that Coyle said- I got this, give me a couple of seasons". Unlike the last coaching staff this is a good thing.

    ONE video?

there isnt one player in college, or nfl for that matter that hasnt had an "OFF" game. or a complete stinker!!

now, come back here with 7 or 8 of these over the last couple years and we will talk.

was it scheme issues? just an off day? its pretty short sighted to take ONE video and say, "see, this guy sux!".

however, what IRELAND gave up to get him was way to much. that is a legit issue, but, thats ireland for ya. what was given up was no fault of the players.

we couldnt have drafted to many CB's for me. it was our biggest need and the MAIN culprit of last years failure. one guy coming off TWO bad injuries and missing most of the last 2 seasons is not the fix on the db issue. marshall? we saw right off why the cards let him walk. that season he had in az was a fluke. he was nothing special before getting hurt and wont be anything special again. another injury guy to hope on!!

nolan carrol? wouldnt even make the pats practice squad. and the rest........, nothing overly exiting. non of the backups could unseat carrol or the pathetic sean smith the last two years and we needed ANYONE to step up!! so, they are saviors this year?

our #3 pic should have been AUSTIN. when the best player in the draft, a once in a 20 year talent falls to you, you TAKE IT! drafting 101.

but, one of the 3 cb's should have been the pic. MILLINER, HAYDEN or TRUFANT. all three of those guys were more productive all the way around and on paper, they have better chances of their game transfering to the nfl. throw in that CB was our biggest need and we could have had the pic of them all, thats what SHOULD have been done. but, ireland traded up to select a guy with few sacks [pass rush specialist? really?] and a MAJOR tweener! i havnt heard exactly what the plan is for him and when you say the WHOLE ORGANIZATION wanted him and no one else, the "plan" should been easy to explain. jack of all trades, master of non is NOT a #3 overall quality pic.

a guy who can cover a college TE isnt worth the #3 pic over all. but, ANYTHING can happen. but all you can do in a draft, with ANY player is look at the tape, look at the numbers. look at the strength of his opponents. look at his health and HOPE he is nfl talent. dion could ABSOLUTELY become a hall of fame player. but, the facts, the odds, the production, injury concerns and size say probably not.

but back on the main point, davis has a LOAD of over all talent and we can not get enough NEW blood in our secondary. had he been taken in the first or early second, i could see some gripe. but the kid is WAY, WAY more than this ONE video. again, you could do this with ANY player, find a tape where he just had an off day or the scheme wasnt working against the opponent, etc... .

i just wish we would have drafted 2 more db's. the ones we have are no talents or MAJOR injury risks.

The issue is that at his present style of play he will be a liability against the run or screens when they come his way. Looks to be some fear there. People on this board fried Sean Smith relentlessly for his tackling ability or lack there of, but he is head and shoulders above Davis against the run (and that saying something). Why Trade Up For That?
