    A Long Snapper Question

Phins have had a great long snapper in Denny for many a year but, he is aging, and a FA after this season. LS is a very specialized position, with not many being VG at it.

My question is why? You don't have to be big. strong, or a great blocker. All ya gotta do is make a long snap accurately. I'm not diminishing the skill, just wondering why more players in College don't work at it to play in the NFL. Is it that hard to do?

You have to be at least 6'0 220..... and the first time you **** up your career is over.... also have to have decent speed to cover on punts... and have really fast times for FGs, XP, and Punts

Its not easy to always be consistent, one bad snap and you turn the ball over. Even Pouncey has had issues with short snaps.

I do understand that it ain't easy but, there are over 100 guys doing it every year in College, with none, as far as I know, being signed as FA. How do teams come up with them?

Also, if you have a guy on the practice squad, is it that tuff to have him work into being one? I know I'm scraping the bottom of the roster barrel here but, it is important to special teams, which do matter, and I just don't get it.

I just think its not a skill that players take seriously enough because everyone grows up thinking they can be an NFL Te or whatever position so many of the more talented players never are used in the position.
I think it would be smart if u were a player that was solid at a position to do everything in your power to be a long snapper if your size was right. I personally dont think its that difficult but I have never tryed to longsnap at an NFL level lol

I played hoops in HS, and very well. One time, I had Sven, a kicker, ask me to snap for his off season practice. No problem. I was embarrassed by a FRAKIN kicker in snapping the ball all over the place. I was pissed and practiced. The next week I got around 80% as VG. It was not "rocket surgery."

However, to be perfect every snap is not an easy thing to do.

My only point is that IF you are on the practice squad, why not practice the long snap 50, 100 or more times a day to increase your value. Agents should think of this. JMO

In the NFL today teams are hesitant to sign a player who is simply a ls. They want more versatility from players, the ability to play defense, run down kick offs, etc. The steelers had James Harrison as their ls for a short time but that failed miserably. As previous posters have stated, one mess up and it's a turnover giving the opposing team great field position or points. Denny will be back this year most likely but I expect them to challenge him and not hesitate to cut him if a player offering versatility shows he is capable of holding the job

I had this conversation with the guy I carpool with at work. His kid is in a battle to get
a starting Center slot, and shortly will be battleing for a Varsity slot. I told him; Why not
get him spun up on long snapping?

You would have thought I'd pulled a string on a light switch.

Oh I actually longsnapped in high school big difference I know but just as in playing center it takes some practice. Luckily I got no taller so after awhile a 5'8 guy was probably not gonna continue long snapping.
I just dont think people like getting hit because you are very exposed.
