Ireland constantly churns the OL. Thomas is a replacement for Incognito to lower salary and give Philbin a young lineman with which to build. In then short term he may compete for Jerry's spot if Lance Louis is not quite healthy.

If everything works out, Ireland will cut ties with Incognito either this off season or next. Thomas is also an emergency tackle if we have injuries.

I'm not as high on Thomas as most seem to be.
"I want guys who want to make an impact on and off the field. Good human beings. Guys who want to get better. Guys who want to improve. They want to be great, want to win. Those types of guys we can work with every day." --Joe Philbin

Really doesn't matter how he is referred. If he gets on the field and is better than the others, he will start. Sliding Incognito to the right side only makes the transition harder. The point is to have a line that does not include incognito in a season or 2. Have you seen Louis play? He pulls better than any lineman we currently have. He is better than any guard we have for our blocking scheme.

We have no clue what Thomas will be yet. We might know where we want to play him but, we have no clue what he will do. Thomas is a 3rd round guard/tackle. He is expected to eventually lock down a starting spot along our oline and be very good.

Martin started last year as a rookie so it possible Thomas could start at one of the Guard spots and backup at LT. Its an open competition for one of the guard spots and no reason Incog cant move to right side if Thomas is better then the rest.
