    Roster is at 90 players

The Dolphins roster at this very moment consists of 90 total players when including the draft picks and undrafted free agents. Why is this important? It is important because the NFL offseason roster limit is 90 players, so the Dolphins are maxed out right, but the rule is a little cloudy if unsigned draft picks count against the limit during mini camps and OTA days.

If Miami plans to sign a veteran offensive tackle between now and training camp, someone has to be released.

Dmitri Patterson would be the first to go IMO... or an undrafted guy.... I just don't see both Richard Marshall and Dmitri Patterson both making the 53.... unless Grimes goes on IR

So...isn't it easy to cut a UFDA if necessary? Not sure why this is a concern.

It really isn't a concern, just interesting that at the same time they are considering adding a veteran offensive tackle they max out the roster limit with undrafted free agents. Makes you wonder if they are not really in a rush to add a veteran offensive tackle here before mandatory mini camps. I think it might be a sign that they won't be adding one in other near future or perhaps one at all.

The 9 unsigned rookies do not count against that roster. Until they sign the Dolphins actually have 81. Now we know they will sign, but until that happens, they do not count. I will look up the new rule, but in the past unsigned players have never counted. Update: Nublar is correct. Undrafted rookies do count under the new rule as does unsigned restricted free agents.

I stand corrected. You are right. Here is a reference: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d...-to-90-players

What this means is Miami will seriously be looking at UDFAs, tryout players, and the 9 guys participating this weekend who are already on the roster like Posey. If a tryout guy impresses he would have to replace a UDFA or roster member. Lot of pressure on all parties at this workout.

They're just maximizing the number of guys they can evaluate at the minicamp. Why sit at 89 or 88 when you can get a look at another body or two? Guys that you might need to sign off the street if the injury bug hits hard. And some of these players may not make our team, but somewhere along the line they might end up on someone else's 53 and who knows, even become good players for them. It pays to know as much as possible about everyone you possibly can...
