New J.Martin article, talks about his new weight and strength..

Can Jonathan Martin get the job done at left tackle?

    http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/m...,5377176.story

Martin spent most of his offseason training with his Stanford teammates in California. He's been putting in intense weight room sessions that have gotten his shoulders significantly broader. He's put on about 10 pounds of muscle and the hope is that improving his functional strength will help him perform better against bull rushers.
"I think it will help a lot. It'll give me a little better anchor when I'm playing against some of the bigger defensive ends," Martin said. "As long as you can move with it I think it gives you an advantage. It was one of the things coaches told me to focus on this offseason and I took that to heart."

Good info. I know Martin gets dogged on here almost as much as Egnew but I'm pretty optimistic that he will continue to make leaps and bounds. Some players come out of college at 22 years old as a monster (J Long) but others still need to work at it and finish growing into their nfl body (Martin). Martin is smart and knows what he needs to do. Seems like he took a big step in that direction.

We have one great rookie season out of a player (jake long) and all the sudden if no one else performs at that level they are a bust. what happened to expecting growth out of a player in year two and not labeling them after one season?

It's always a good sign when players actually take what coaches tell them to heart and act on it. I still think Marrin will end up being a steal!

Sounds like he's been working hard. Hopefully he can play a solid LT for us this season, but hes still prob a year or so away from being starting quality.

10lbs of muscle for a guy like Martin is pretty significant! Last year he carried a lot of baby fat, I am willing to be he lost a significant % of his baby fat. Which means his actual body weight went down and was brought back up with muscle. So even though his weight might be only +10lbs I bet there is a much more significant change in his bmi.
