    Oliver Vernon

For those not knowing, Vernon is of Haitian descent, Oliver is pronounced like Sir Lawrence of classic movie fame, and his dad is a Miami cop. Back to football, and what PFF had to say of him in his rookie season.

He played 445 snaps (39%), and was rated the #34 overall DE in a 4-3. He dropped into coverage 54 times, with a good grade of +2.5. He played the run 102 times, with a good grade of +2.8.

Vernon rushed the QB 289 times, with 3 sacks, 7 QB hits, and 11 hurries. His grade was a negative 6.1. Not good, and shows that he left a lot of plays on the field. This is understandable for a rookie.

From what I have heard, he worked his ass off in the off season, and I expect a lot of improvement this season. It's important for the team, as he and Misi at DE give us the options of picking and choosing how to bring Jordan into the mix. This also allows Wake to be fresher in the 4th quarter, and Odrick to move inside more.

Vernon is a very important part of what this D will do this year.

I agree, I think he will contribute nicely. He was seemingly at the right place and time early in the season to make big plays....then the dreaded rookie wall. He just adds another weapon in our skilled and deep front 7. im excites to see if he plays big this year.

Not really the same thing when "phinDE" was trying to point out that the spelling of his name is similar to how it is pronounced. The OP was stating that Oliver sounds more like Olivier b/c of his Haitian descent. Olivier sounds more like Olivier b/c there is an extra "i" in there.

I assume that the "Spelling Bee" judges are now happy, and I lost.

Now, can we focus on the player posted IF no one is confused as to who it is. lol

He "flashed" last year, but I'm not sure he is going to be ready this year. I think this is one of the reasons we grabbed Jordan. He may be ready next year, and may replace Wake in the future...

I do think he will get more snaps this year, because I do think he is a be better option than Odrick for rushing the passer.

Agreed, and he made some Big plays on special teams as well. Really nice pick, and remember Ireland saying how he asked his staff to change to 4-3 players very late, after the coaches were hired, and we were switching to a 4-3.

Vernon is a more complete DE than Jordan, who I think should be an OLB.

I think that is why there are questions on whether we will move to a 3-4; especially with the other additions. Has anyone reported what the defense is doing in OTA's?
