Draft Shortcomings- FA Has Made Us Average.

I'm looking at our projected starters, and seeing a lot of FA help, which means draft picks who have not worked out.

On D, we have Grimes, Marshall, and Patterson at CB, Ellerbe and Wheeler at LB, and Wake and Starks on the DL. On O, there is Wallace, Gibson, Keller, Cog, Clabbo, and maybe Lewis and/or Leach. That's around half our starters, and pretty good moves by Ireland.

However, gotta look at what "coulda been" if draft picks worked out.

A few examples are VD and Smith at CB, which would have given us another $10-15M on the cap. Clay, Egnew, and now Simms and Miller at TE in place of Keller @ $4M. Add in others if ya like.

That's another $15- 20M we would not be paying if some of our draft picks worked out. The past two drafts appear to be much better but, have to be proven or, we will be looking at FA, and mediocrity for years to come.

    *EDIT

Having home grown talent is more that money saved in FA. It adds stability to the franchise, which we are sorely lacking. It adds familiar faces to the franchise for Phans, and kids growing up to be Phans. It adds to players knowing and trusting each other, which turns into better team play, and more wins.

In the NFL, you win with play makers, and I cannot remember the last time we drafted one (not counting Soliai, Long or, Pouncey). Out of all the draft picks, over many a moon, you would think that we would have gotten at least one or two by dumb luck alone but, not a one. There is no reasonable explanation.

Now, maybe the odds are catching up with us. Tannehill, Miller, Jordan, and/or maybe a TE, WR, CB have the potential to be play makers 9along with Jones), and make us forget the past. That would be very special.

Even with all that we have $17M+ will still be $12+ million under the cap (after we sign Jordan to a high estimate of $5M cap number this year based on 2012#3 pick Trent Richardson) and a lot of those guys are on 1 year "prove it" or expiring (Cog, Clabo, Keller, Grimes) contracts, so it wont matter next year. In addition, by signing Wheeler and Ellerbe we actually saved $4Million vs keeping Dansby and Burrnett.

We have no issues as far as cap space goes so who cares if we spent a bunch in FA.

meh. I don't know that you can look at it quite like that. Eventually every player you have on your team is going to require either a contract extension, or you draft someone to replace them. some of the players you mentioned if they had panned out, would've required big contracts next year. You are right that we need to be better at building a good core of our team through the draft.

So many repeated threads. If draft picks had worked out they wouldnt be playing for free.

RE: Draft Shortcomings- FA Has Made Us Average.

Look at the colts 2 years ago. Manning hid how bad that team was (not saying they didn't flop).

Look at the patriots. Brady single handedly wins them games.

In todays NFL QB is king and look at how many qbs we missed on or passed on. The team would look a whole lot different if saban had brought in brees. The team would look a whole lot different if parcels had taken Ryan.

We struck out on QB for so long that we were never better than average. Lets hope thill takes a step forward this year.

with us drafting poorly until recently, how long did you want to rebuild for? we kinda knew this already. The only way Ireland (maybe he planned this) was to have big, avail money this year and spend it. we just didn't have the time to develop players - plus Ireland's job is on the line

All teams use free agency to help their team, the draft is not the only source for teams or even just the "good" teams. For example, take a look at the projected starters on each team in the AFC East that came from the draft:

New England has 15 projected starters from the draft

Miami has 13 projected starters from the draft(Done by projecting that none of the 2013 rookies are "starters")

Buffalo has 13 projected starters from the draft

New York Jets has 12 projected starters from the draft

Pretty much the same across the board in the AFC East. Though the best team in the division for some time does have the most draft picks, but it isn't like Miami has far more help from free agency than New England. The gap is only two starters.

Take a look at some other notable NFL teams:

Super Bowl Champion Ravens has 16 projected starters from the draft

Super Bowl Loser 49ers has 14 projected starters from the draft

Everyone's offseason favorite Seahawks has 11 projected starters from the draft

So are the Dolphins really that much worse off than most teams in the draft/not drafted breakdown of the starting lineup? No, I think the Dolphins are about average in that area. Now, are the starters that got out of the draft equal to that of what other teams have done? Well, that is an entirely different discussion.
