Best way to find out is throw him the ball and see what happens..
Outside of QB - TE is probably the most difficult position.
1. You have to know and be physically capable of pass protections and the techniques and sometimes blocking DE's
2. You have to know run game, and like pass pro, be physically able to do so with the right techniques, blocking DL, LB's Secondary
3. You have to be able to run routes, make the appropriate adjustments.
4. You have to beat OLB's, ILB's Safetys and CB's sometimes in coverage.
5. Oh and you're probably playing a lot of special teams as well.
It takes time. And with Keller out - Clay/Simms and Egnew are going to get a lot more reps this year than they would have.
Egnew looks like he he just may pan out. Kid was in shock last year, now it looks like he could be a solid contributor.
What's the story with this guy? Is he just not that bright and can't grasp the playbook? Whats the deal here...? We have that big boy Sims just waiting there. I mean worst case you say "run 3 yards, turn around" or "jump for the ball when in the endzone". We need a big body.
The issue with Egnew has been as a football player. In college he was a glorified possession receiver, because that's how Missouri plays. He was extremely good at that, but he lacked a lot of the basic skills to be a TE in the NFL. One of those was blocking. If you watch him this preseason and his cameos in the season, it's worth noting that he has shown to be one of our best blocking TE's. He also has issues learning and executing the complex route tree we use in Miami. But, he had a catch last week.
Those of you wanting to write Egnew off might be interested in a little comparison. This week we are playing the New Orleans Saints. Here is how Egnew's NFL Combine compared with the TE's who came out in the last 4 drafts ... including Jimmy Graham. The rankings are for all 4 years combined and only include the Top 15, so if someone scores below 15th they are simply listed as "Not Top 15." When someone does not participate in an event I have listed "DNP."
Event Egnew E Rank Graham G Rank 40 Yd Dash 4.62 9th 4.56 6th Bench Press 21 reps Not Top 15 DNP DNP Vert. Jump 36.0" 8th 38.5" 4th Broad Jump 10'11" 1st 10'0" 10th 3-Cone 7.03 Not Top 15 6.90 7th 20 Yd Shuttle 4.32 Not Top 15 DNP DNP 60 Yd Shuttle 12.07 Not Top 15 11.76 12th
So, as you can see, Jimmy Graham is slightly faster in all speed drills and jumps a 2.5 inches higher. Egnew jumps almost a foot farther and still holds the record in the broad jump, and participated in all events, whereas the not-strong Graham skipped the bench press and 20 yard shuttle. Both are 6'5" and incredible athletes. Egnew is stronger. Graham is possibly the most physically gifted TE in the game ... but physically Egnew is quite a specimen. Coming out of college both were extremely raw. If the light ever comes on for Egnew--and recent cameo's have been somewhat promising--he has the physical ability to be a top notch TE.
"I want guys who want to make an impact on and off the field. Good human beings. Guys who want to get better. Guys who want to improve. They want to be great, want to win. Those types of guys we can work with every day." --Joe Philbin
- Defending the Read Option - What do you think?
It takes average of 3 years to develop RAW NFL talent into a caliber starter.
Look at Charles Clay, Rishard Matthews is coming around, Lamar Miller, etc.....
Packers are experts at drafting raw talent, sitting behind NFL veterans for 2-3 years and then moving up on the Depth Chart. I read somewhere that the Packers have the lowest FA signings (out of team) over the past 5 years.
Looks like Philbin likes to take this philosophy with the draft.
"What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
Egnew was drafted because his tools/combine results are off the charts
Am I the only one that is getting excited about Egnew because of this thread?
