    The Hunt ...

Rifle season (deer) began Monday morning here in WV. Up at 5:00, and in the woods about a half hour before first light. Single digit temperatures suck - except (for some reason) when I'm on a mountain with my rifle. I saw ten of 'em that day and had quality, broadside shots on four of them from between 30-75 yards.

But, since I had my hopes up for a buck first (all 10 were does) ... I fired no shots.

Back to camp to throw back a few cold ones with the boys.

    Day two:

Down came the snow. Pretty scenery ...

On day two 'ol Bump is faaaaaar less picky about deer gender. Luckily for the deer, none of them crossed my path. 0 for 2

Still having a great time. Back to camp - got crushed drunk Tuesday night.

My buddy got a doe late with only about 10 minutes of shooting light remaining. *** WARNING - If the sight of a dead, gutted deer hanging from a tree outside of camp offends your tender sensibilities DO NOT CLICK ON "SPOILER"!!! ***

    Spoiler

    Day 3:

Ugh! ****ing alarm clock ... Ok, ok - I'm up already!!!

Lots of evening rain followed by overnight snow made for some interesting footing. Somehow, my wobbly ass managed to stay upright, but by the time I got back to camp everybody else was muddy as ****.

Saw no deer again. 0 for 3

Note to self: Quit being so ****ing picky. When the hunting gods present you with a bounty of choice shots, take one DAMMIT!!! You might not get another.

Home for turkey day with the family.

I may head back down tomorrow morning for a couple more days ...
    2014 Goals:
    1) Win the next game.
    2) See goal #1

So, anyway ... After Turkey Day:

    Day 4:

Slept in at home & didn't get back down to camp until noon. My buddy Tim got a 5 point this morning.

The afternoon hunt was uneventful until the last 15 mins. of shooting light. Two little 'uns - bout 1.5 year olds came into view at around about 100 yards. I watched them eat (waiting for their BIGGER escort to stroll in) until it was too dark for a good shot. Got up, strapped my pack back on, and quietly retreated back to camp. They never knew I was there.

    0 for 4

    Tomorrow is another day.

Tonight ... Beer, campfire, listening to the coyotes celebrating @ today's found gutpiles in the forest, chilling with the boys, & the most amazing stars East of the Mississippi. Hell, the clear skies have even allowed me a partial signal tonight for the iPhone.

Life is good. Team Bumpus out.

I was in the same boat Bumpy. Saw a crap ton of deer but waited for El Gigante! I saw him but way out of reach for my muzzle loader. Refused to shoot a doe or lesser buck...wish I would have now as the freezer is bare. Good luck my friend, enjoy the woods.

    Day 5:

    The Stalk.

Six hours of slowly creeping along the mountain. Analyzing every sound. Silently cursing when it turned out to be a squirrel. Searching each and every shadow on the partially snow-covered forest floor through my glass. Freezing in my tracks whenever my boot inadvertently found a stick to snap. Searching, searching, searching ...

The crack of rifles continued to ring out periodically through the hollows, yet still nothing comes into view for 'ol Bump.

Return to camp for a quick mid-day siesta.

Hiked out along the powerline before dark for a last try. Alas, still nothing.

    0 for 5

    Returning home.

Zero harvested deer by Bumpus at camp this year. Some by my choice, most by their own good/lucky choices.

In the end, it doesn't really matter. It's about the hunt - not the kill.

I had an absolutely great ****ing time!

Besides, that huge mother****er that I didn't see this year - will be bigger next year.

The Great White Hunter returns home empty handed, but richer for the experience.

Had a small spike in the scope opening day (more to see what the hell it even was then to shoot)and didn't shoot him. Figured it was 8am opening morning let me test the water. Later that day two doe, scared ****less from being blasted at coming up the valley. Let them pass up the side of the hill. 1:30 it was so hot I started nodding off due to lack of sleep the night before. Decided to find a nice tree to take a nappy under. Windy as hell couldn't hear anything but I hear footsteps! Look over to my right from my Rip VanWinkle position Lol and see a large doe walking right toward me only 20 yards away. I thought she was going to step on me. She passed within 7 yards of me laying on the forest floor and never saw me. By far the closest I have ever had a deer near me when not in a tree stand.

It was pretty damn cool. I haven't gotten back out in the woods yet. I'm not happy about that but the one day I had was perfectly relaxing and a great hunting experience.
    Peace and Humptiness Forever

Gun season started yesterday in Ohio. I live next to a state park with several hunting area's close by. The hunters usually park down at a bridge that goes over a local run.
As I am driving to work I cross over the bridge to see 3 pickup trucks from hunters who are back in the woods. At the same time 3 large female deer are mulling around on the road by the hunters trucks. I laughed my ass off. Tell you what those deer aren't stupid.

Several years ago I went hunting with my father-in-law (now ex) and his club used dogs. I had never hunted with dogs before but quickly found out you gotta stay in the woods in one spot for them to be effective. After a day of being told I didn't know what the hell I was doing I fell asleep under a fat cedar tree. Woke up to the sound of an 8-pointer walking right up to me. Stopped about 10 feet short; looked me in the eye, stomped a hoof; snorted; turned and trotted away. With the 12 guage laying across my lap there was no way I could have gotten a realistic shot off. Too spooked to even try. Great day though.

I went hunting for deer, and ended up shooting a whale shark.
