Steam Machine - Awesome or Flop?

It's coming and I'm excited for the bar to be raised, I hope Valve pushes other gaming consoles to match!!

The gaming world is watching and I'm watching with much intent. I want the next level, I want Valve to push Microsoft and Sony to the next level. Whether or not this is actually the next step in console gaming remains to be seen but I can assure you it is a step in the right direction!
    Peace and Humptiness Forever

I thought it was going to be a good thing. Only problem is, as others around the net have pointed out, it's a PC without a monitor. These machines range anywhere from $400-$1000. It also sounds like a majority of them will be customizable as well. So it begs the question, what's the point if they can't compete, price wise, with the console market? You are probably better off just building a PC.

The point of this is similar to what android did. They don't plan to be hardware guys. Release the code as they have then put a machine out there using the code. Manufacturers will come if there is even mediocre sales. Put a free os that played games to get in on some of the Microsoft Sony Nintendo money. The number of Linux games grows and with better drivers and graphics engines from crytec and others being ported bodes well.

True, but a lot of people buy consoles because they don't want to build a PC. It takes the work aspect out of it. I could see it potentially working, especially as Valve is much more consumer friendly than Sony or Microsoft, but probably not as much in it's initial incarnation.
