    1984

MGM(HD) just finished showing the movie version of "1984" based on George Orwell's famous book.

    Anybody else see this?

I thought it was pretty faithful to the book.

I've been meaning to watch it, just never got around to it. John Hurt is great.

I watch the original black and white version long ago and thought it was an unrealistic kind of boring movie that was far fetched.
The book of course was required reading in school.
Turns out I was wrong about big brother watching us

    Ever see Slaughterhouse 5 ?

The Hardy Boys (altho Holden would have been a hero to me if only he could solve crimes and "cuddle" with Nancy Drew)

    Thread-jack!

I believe mine was either Stephen King's Night Shift, Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time, or Geraldine McCaughrean's Hercules. I read them around the same time in 3rd grade, but can't remember which was first.

That pretty heady reading for a third grader. I was reading Archie and The Justice League.

I had the benefit of being raised by teachers, so reading wasn't an issue. Full comprehension, on the other hand...

Hercules was no problem. It was basically a glorified comic book with fewer pictures (I was also a huge X-Men fan then). Night Shift wasn't too bad, though there were plenty of adult themes I obviously didn't understand. I definitely missed the deeper aspects of A Wrinkle in Time the first time I read it, but I've probably read that book more than any other book in my life. I still pick it up occasionally to read it again.
