House votes down the DRAFT 402-2....Take that....

    Excerpt from WSJ...

..."There is certainly no one in the Bush Administration who has any idea like that at all," Donald Rumsfeld said Monday. "I don't even believe there's any Republican that I've heard of in the Congress who has that idea." He might have added that the senior military leadership hates the prospect most of all.
But sometimes it takes an act of Congress to kill a politically mischievous rumor. This was the hope yesterday of House Republican leaders, who decided to schedule a vote on the Universal National Service Act, sponsored by New York Democrat Charles Rangel. Under Mr. Rangel's proposed law, "all persons" -- including women -- would be required to perform military or civilian service "in furtherance of national defense and homeland security." Mr. Rangel wants the draft to return because he figures if rich kids from Harvard have to serve with the middle-class kids who dominate the service ranks, then a President would be less likely to go to war.
We went to press too early to see the final floor vote. But in the end even Mr. Rangel was expected to oppose his own bill, calling the Republicans' rush to bring the bill to a vote "a prostitution of the legislative process."
If Mr. Rangel is serious about getting more rich kids into the military, we have a suggestion: Prevail upon Harvard and other elite schools to allow the Reserve Officer Training Corps back on campus.... Making it easier for them to join the military would be a lot easier on everyone than bringing back the draft.

UPDATE: Vote was held.......402 nay 2 yay..

I Hope this puts this Bull$hit to rest.

It won't stop. Think about it, it's not like these ppl are dealing with reality when it comes to their fears.

This is an issue that is easily flip-floppable by both candidates.. If there ever comes a need for some action in Korea while Iraq still needs troop, I could see the draft being re-instated..

The reality of it is that it would never be truly addressed until after this election anyway.

    I agree DeDolfan.

Why would the repubs announce a draft before an election!

Good, at least congress knows what they are doing on this issue.

The bad news is that my congressman was part of the 2.

The good news is that you can attempt to remedy that by voting for somebody else in less than a month.

I can't vote this year because I'm too young, but I will be eligible next year.

Anyway, my district is probably one of the most Democratic in the country. Even though Charles Rangel is a moron (and I would vote against him if I could, so in this election I want a Democrat to become the next president and a Republican to be my congressman, I bet there aren't many other people on this board who are open to voting for people in either party like that), he gets a lot of the vote because there are way too many unaware voters who just vote for him because he is a Democrat. If people were more aware (this goes for both Democrats and Republicans, tons of people vote for both without knowing anything about the candidates), Rangel wouldn't win.
