NFL Approval of New Kickoff Rule

McDaniel did not fire Crossman because he knew the Dolphins' struggles on kick/punt coverage were more of an organizational problem than a Crossman one. After 20 years in the league and with some top 10 units at other places, Crossman did not suddenly forget how to coach STs. The team did not allot enough practice time devoted to kick and punt coverage. This was reported by one of the local media writers as the staff changes were taking place. Hopefully, this means McDaniel will see to it they use more practice time on the coverage units.

It’s rare these days for this place to surprise me.

I did not have “Somebody carrying water for the special teams coach” on my 2024 FinHeaven off-season BINGO card.

Don't shoot the messenger. One of the local media folks did say that. I presume your reaction of raucous laughter means you know better, Crossman is pond scum and should be shot at dawn.

I like the change.....puts some additional excitement back into the kickoff.

It will be interesting to see which teams can take the most advantage of it. We certainly have the speedsters to do so....

Agree, but I'd sacrifice some speed to get quickness.

Not a huge fan of the change. Now offenses will start even further down the field. It will be easier to score which makes having a good defense even less important.

The sport will be gone before 2030 thanks to no more tackling.
They already knew they would do this years ago

Crossman is the worst ST coordinator we’ve had in 30 years.

Not really a fan, but open to a change because touchbacks are dreadful.
When I watched some video of XFL kickoffs, the first thing I thought that was Achane or Tyreke could take it to the house 2-3 times per season under these new rules.

Obviously, there will be injury concerns but I think Miami would be stupid not to at least put Achane back there. I think another exciting product of this rule change will be that we start seeing teams draft return specialists just for that role. That’s something that’s gone by the wayside in todays NFL but back in the day, guys like Eric Metcalf and Deion could change the entire complexion of a game with a kick return.
Or Jake Scott or Charlie Leigh!

Should make for a more exciting game. Endzone downed and through the endzone kicks now go to the 35 yard line causing a different strategy for the kicking team.
So the strategy will be high hang time and land at the 5? Almost a punt rather than a kick.
Is a punt instead of a kick a choice?
It seems often the return guy is different between kick offs and punts.

I would occasionally use a down icon as well. Not often, as when I disagree I usually quote ask a question.

Too many rule changes. I used to love to watch football as a teenager. The receiver has too much protection. besides it was great when one of the guys older brothers brought some beer and we all could share it. Of course the guy that lived next to me was a car thief and they had tracked him down to his apartment next to me. I could have s**t when I answered the door with a beer in my hand and a detective flashed his badge.
